This is a 100% online asynchronous course, which means there are NO weekly required meeting times. Perhaps this is your first online class, and you don’t know what to expect. Or maybe you’ve taken an online class before and didn’t love it. This class is designed to be a combination of activities, mini lectures, discussions and reflections.
There are NO exams (only short, untimed quizzes), as research consistently shows that exams aren’t a good measure of whether you are able to apply key concepts. Many people also find exams anxiety provoking- which we will cover in more detail later in the course. I know we are all busy and have many different things going on at once, and my goal for this course is that it is engaging and enjoyable for you. My hope is that you walk away from the course wanting to know more about psychology! I am here to support you throughout the course and hope you will stop by my “virtual office” during student hours and introduce yourself.
There is a common misconception that online classes are easier/less time consuming than face-to-face classes, when in fact they often require more time and self-discipline. Since we do not meet at a specific day/time each week, it is ultimately your responsibility to ensure you have completed the assigned material each week. Some students say that they “feel like they are teaching themselves” in an online class, but that is not the case in this course. I will hold student hours each week where you are always welcome, post mini lectures covering key course content, and design the assignments in an equitable manner. However, it is up to you to watch these, complete the assigned readings and other videos, and complete your work. A good rule of thumb is that you should expect to set aside at least 9 hours per week completing your work in one online course. I am not telling you this to alarm or worry you, I am telling you this so that you have realistic expectations going into the course. Of course, everyone has different learning styles and some of you may need more time to complete your work each week and some of you may need less time, 9 hours is just the average time needed for one online course.
I know we all come into the course with different learning styles and previous experiences, and I will do everything I can to meet your needs. I will provide you with resources for effective studying strategies based on learning styles and will tailor the course based on your feedback. In return, I ask that you are engaged in the course, which means checking Canvas at least twice a week for announcements, staying on top of the readings and course work, submitting assignments on time, and reaching out to me with any questions, feedback, or concerns.
Typically, courses are completed in a semester which is 16 weeks.
This is a short course which means you have 8 weeks to complete the same amount of work that you would complete in a full-length semester class.
The workload may feel overwhelming at first if you compare it to your 16-week courses, but remember you are covering the same material in half the time.
I am here to support you during the course and will be checking in with everyone periodically about the format of the course in case something just isn’t working!
TL;DR: You will be doing the same amount of work expected of you in a semester-long class in half the amount of time.
