Nick and his parents had a Powerpoint presentation to share about their family's culture and traditions. Their families come from lots of countries. One family tradition is on St. Patrick's Day, Grammy cooks a tasty Irish meal. Dad showed us his Italian Horn necklace, which is given for good luck. He wears it all of the time! Nick might be getting his for his First Communion :) They also brought some Italian cookies to share with the class! Thanks for sharing :)
Evelyn and her mom worked on a poster and also had a Powerpoint presentation. They chose Germany which is from both parents sides of the family. They shared some traditions they still do today including different foods they like to eat. They told us that Christmas trees originated in Germany and that is one of their favorite traditions! They had many pictures to share of their decorations! For a treat, mom brought it Christmas cookies for everyone. They were a hit! Thanks for sharing :)
Olivia and her mom made a poster about France. This is where her great grandmother came from. They highlighted many fun French traditions. The kids had many questions about Mardi Gras. Olivia had on her French outfit. They also talked about some of their families traditions including one where the entire extended family meets at the cemetery on Christmas and Easter to pray and talk to their loved ones who have passed. As for a treat, mom brought everyone macarons! They were very delicious! Thanks for sharing :)
Hazel and her family created a poster containing information about her culture and traditions. It included languages spoken, favorites, clothing, and fun facts. Mom and dad also brought it a suitcase full of fun items! Hazel modeled some of her traditional hats and jewelry. Dad also modeled his Hmong vest. Mom also brought several books about the Hmong culture that she left, so the kids will have a chance to read them in the coming days. One of the treats they like to eat is jelly. At home, they eat it frozen, but in class we had it room temp. They also shared a cookies and cream flavored treat! They both were a big hit! Thanks for sharing :)
Berlin wrote and illustrated her book called "A Book About My Culture". Mom and dad came in to help present as well. They talked about where their families came from and showed us on a map. Berlin talked about going to Florida a lot to visit family. Berlin loves all kinds of music. Mom shared a special story about when Berlin was a baby. The doctor said that she has a special heart :) They talked about Berlin's favorite holiday - Christmas! One tradition is to wear matching PJs on Christmas Eve. They also love chocolate chip cookies! So they brought in a bunch to share with everyone. Thanks for sharing :)
Piper wrote and illustrated her book called "Children Around the World". Mom and dad came in to help present as well. Piper talked about how her dad's side of the family came from Sweden. She showed us o a map where it was and also what the capital is, Stockholm. People in her country like to eat Swedish meatballs and cookies called Spritz. They talked about St. Lucy, a day that is celebrated in Sweden. Dad told us a few words in Swedish. The big hit was all of the yummy cookies they made together. Spritz are made by using a press machine. Everyone got to eat several tasty treats! Thanks for sharing :)
Brayden and Cameron along with their mom made a presentation to share about their cultural heritage and traditions. Mom and dad's families originated from Africa and Ireland. Their families are now located in Chicago and Monroe. They love all things Milwaukee like the Bucks, Brewers, Cousins Subs, and Rocky Rococo Pizza. Mom's side of the family are big Notre Dame fans, so every weekend during football season, they will be found cheering on ND. Monroe is where they spend holidays. It is known for their cheese. They shared swiss cheese and mini cakes, which were a BIG hit! Thanks for sharing :)
Luke L. and his parents worked on a PowerPoint presentation to share about their heritage and traditions. They shared the countries their families come from and the different flags. The Liedhegner's also have family in Cincinnati where dad grew up. They talked about a lot of family traditions that happen in Cincinnati. Two places from there are Skyline Chili and Graeter's Ice Cream. We were all lucky to be able to try the famous chili dogs and ice cream! Thanks for sharing :)
Everett and his mom made a poster for their presentation. He talked about his cultural heritage and drew and colored the flags. He also talked about his and his family's likes - music, treats (donuts, which they also shared some with the class), and also favorite things to do like swimming and sledding. Luke and his family worked together to create a poster all about Canada. Luke's family is from Canada and still has many extended family members living there. They talked about money (and let the kids feel that it has a different texture than American money), their flag, some famous people and places, and maple syrup. Mom used the Smartboard to show where they lived in Canada and how far away it is from Tosa. We also watched a short video about Canada. Dad made mini pancakes to share for a treat with Canadian maple syrup. Emily came from 4th grade to help pass the treat out. Mom and Luke both had on their Canadian shirts and mom had Canadian socks on with the maple leaf on them. Thanks for sharing :)
Camille and her mom worked together on creating her book, "A Book About My Culture". It talked about some of her favorite things, including music, art, and books. She also shared many of the Mexican traditions that her family does including celebrating 3 Kings Day on January 6th. Thanks for sharing :)
Her great (12 times) grandfather came over on the Mayflower! Audrey and mom created a poster and also shared some photographs on the SmartBoard. They brought in a treat of popcorn to share, which was eaten on the first Thanksgiving and is still a tradition in the Carey house today. Thanks for sharing :)
