In the beginning, our group considered raising funds to donate to Mesha, or finding ways to allow people to donate through our website. However, Pete discouraged this, explaining that dealing with matters involving money would be too complicated and messy for our project. Thus, we chose to focus on learning and spreading awareness instead. The website originally started on this Google Site, before we transferred the information to Wix to access more functionality and design tools.
We were able to meet with Mesha who joined us on Zoom from Tanzania, 11 hours ahead of us in San Luis Obispo! We wanted to get her first hand descriptions of her work in the schools in Arusha, as well as get her ideas about building our website.
Below highlights some of the details we learned from talking to her.
Mesha described her goals of how to fight poverty and violence:
Help young girls who are vulnerable (married and/or pregnant at young age)
Girls who have to take care of other children
Give girls access to supplies in order to attend school
Education system in Tanzania
The first 7 years of school are free. However, after that, many girls can't further attend boarding school because the required resources (e.g. uniforms, textbooks, backpacks) are often inaccessible.
Mesha said that the root of all problems is education, and that she is using education to lift up women
Last year Mesha and her organization supported 78 girls
The future goal is to reach 200 students in all districts of Arusha
4 districts in Arusha region of Tanzania (Ngorongoro, Longido, Monduli, Karatu)
Our group has certainly learned so much — prior to this project, none of us had even heard of the Maasai people. That being said, working on this project has been interesting. In class, we frequently discuss the causes and consequences of development failures. We've come to recognize that there is only so much we can do to support Mesha's cause, given the limitations of our knowledge and our geographical distance. Creating this website probably is the best way we can help, while inflicting the least potential harm.
