The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced cutting-edge technology subjects such as artificial intelligence (AI), coding, and data science into the school curriculum for students in classes IX, X.
As per the National Education Policy 2020, promoting skill education in schools will be significantly emphasized. The policy aims to overcome the current social status associated with vocational education gradually. Thus, integrating vocational education programs into mainstream education in all institutions.
To improve India’s future potential by building a comprehensive partnership to enhance students’ skills early on.
According to CBSE’s circular to schools, the board has listed 33 subjects: artificial intelligence, financial literacy, coding, data science, augmented reality, Kashmiri embroidery, application of satellites, humanity, and Covid-19.
Moreover, affiliated schools will not have to pay any fee to CBSE for introducing any Skill Module. The board has taken the initiative to ensure that schools do not face any financial burden while teaching these new-age subjects.
The policy recognizes that mathematics and mathematical thinking will be essential for India’s future and its leadership role in future fields and professions involving artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, etc. Thus, mathematics and computational thinking will be emphasized more throughout the school years, starting with the foundational stage through various innovative methods.
The policy states that activities involving coding will be introduced in Middle Stage. The teachers would use regular puzzles and games that make mathematical thinking more enjoyable and engaging. This innovative technique would help promote computational thinking and help students understand complex algorithms while having fun.
The CBSE circular to school heads stated, “The National Education Policy-2020 has emphasized promoting Skill education in schools. This policy aims to overcome the social status hierarchy associated with vocational education. It requires the integration of vocational education programs into mainstream education in all educational institutions in a phased manner.”
Introducing AI, coding, and data science in the middle school curriculum will help students build a strong foundation in cutting-edge technology from an early age. This move will help them develop the skills necessary to succeed in today’s fast-evolving world. And also prepare them for future jobs. With this initiative, India takes a step closer to achieving its goal of becoming a global leader in technology and innovation.
The introduction of tech subjects such as AI, coding, and data science in the middle school curriculum has garnered much attention from educators and parents alike. Some of the benefits of early exposure to these subjects include:
Improved Problem-Solving Skills: Tech subjects require students to develop analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Introducing these subjects early in their academic journey gives students ample time to develop and enhance these skills.
More excellent Career Opportunities: As technology advances, the demand for skilled professionals in AI, data science, and cybersecurity is rising. Early exposure to these subjects will give students a head start in building their careers in these lucrative fields.
Enhanced Critical Thinking: Learning to code requires students to think critically and logically. It also helps them learn how to break down complex problems into smaller, more manageable tasks. These skills are essential not only in tech-related jobs but also in other fields.
Improved Creativity: Tech subjects allow students to express creativity by designing and creating new products or solutions. For instance, students can develop their games, apps, and websites through coding. This allows them to showcase their unique ideas and perspectives.
Better Understanding of Technology: Students must understand how technology works in today’s digital age. Introducing tech subjects early in their academic journey will give students a deeper understanding of various technologies and how they impact our lives.
