Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) - link added 16.05.24
16.05.24 This is a link to a recently launched website to support students preparing for ESAT or TMUA.
Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing used to run TMUA, but this changed for 2025 entries (read this news article for further information). It is now run by Universities Admissions Test (UAT) UK.
For 2025 entries TMUA Test Sitting 1 will be on Wednesday 16th and 17th October 2024.
TMUA is computer based, lasts 2 hours 30 minutes in total and is divided into two papers.
Paper 1: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge 20 multiple-choice questions 75 minutes
Assesses your ability to apply your knowledge of mathematics in new situations.
Paper 2: Mathematical Reasoning 20 multiple-choice questions 75 minutes
Assesses your ability to deal with mathematical reasoning, and simple ideas from elementary logic.
You cannot use a calculator or dictionary, there is no pass or fail and you do not lose any marks for trying a question.
Results for the TMUA are reported on a scale that runs from 1 (low) to 9 (high) with scores being reported to one decimal place. This allows scores on different versions of the test in different test sittings to be reported on a common scale. Scores are typically used alongside other information provided as part of your university application.
The focus of the TMUA is on mathematical thinking and reasoning skills. It uses mathematics you will have already learned in your school studies, so the best way to prepare is to familiarise yourself with the test format and style of questions. It is recommended that you read the test specification, Notes on Logic and Proof, and answer the specimen papers under timed test conditions.
There are helpful archived past papers and worked answers via this link.
These are historic TMUA papers. Although the TMUA is now computer-based, both the content specification and question style are unchanged, so this archive of past papers can be used when preparing for the test.
