As a child, I never understood what it meant to be Puerto Rican. For me, my background was, well, in the background. I’ve spent all of my life in a predominantly white community. While I’ve had exposure to many amazing educational and social experiences, I’ve found it difficult to connect culturally to my surroundings and nurture my Latina identity. Working with Habitat has given me an opportunity to both practice my Spanish and connect with my culture.
Currently, I'm also connecting with my culture through being an English as a Second Language tutor. Two days a week, I'm able to help other students improve their vocabulary, comprehension, presentational and conversational skills in English.
I'm very fortunate to have had amazing opportunities to practice my Spanish as I am currently one of 14 students taking AP Spanish Literature and I'm the President of The Spanish Honors Society.
I will be attending The Ohio State University *Go Bucks!* as an Eminence Fellow and Stamps Scholar.
I plan to study Environmental Chemistry, Spanish, and Entomology.
Being able to communicate effectively to a diverse audience is a big goal of JAGS. This project stresses the importance of recognizing the perspectives of other cultures and communicating with them in their native language. Knowing Spanish and about the Latinx culture can help to prepare me for many jobs and circumstances in my future.
Spanish is incredibly useful in any major at any university or in any job. It can propel you into any field that works internationally or domestically or interacts with others on a daily basis. In the United States, Spanish is the 2nd most common language with a whopping 40 million native speakers! That doesn't even include the people who learning it as a second language.
