Types of Wireless Routers

Wireless routers are the special and most efficient networking devices able to provide easy and wireless routing functionality to the users. It’s a small box, which can be used to communicate one network connection to a bunch of users in the corporate or commercial environment.

It is a multitalented device with 3 fundamental functions as discussed below:

· It works as a Router, managing the distribution of data packets between the clients in a networking scenario.

Main Types:

The only criteria on the basis of which these networking instruments can be classified is the number of frequency bands in each instrument. These frequency bands are allocated with particular bandwidth. All these three types are discussed as under:

1. Dual Band Routers:

As obvious from the name, dual band routers are the devices which have 2 frequency bands, one of which is 2.4 GHz and second is 5 GHz. Both bands have different bandwidth capabilities on them. This is a pretty old system, so a lot of dual band routers can’t be seen in the market. Some examples of dual band routers are as under:

N900 is a dual band router which provides the combined speed of 900 Mb/s, 450 Mb/s by each of its frequency band.

AC1750 is another dual band routing device providing 1300Mb/s bandwidth on 5GHz band and 450 Mb/s on 3 GHz band, summing up to 1750 Mb/s.

AC1900 is another example from dual band routers which provides a total of 1900 Mb/s speed.

2. Tri band Routers:

Tri band routers have one additional band of 5GHz, thus providing a greater bandwidth. Further two types under tri-band routers are AC3200 and AC5300 with provision of 3200 and 5300 Mb/s speed respectively.

3. DD-WRT devices:

DD-WRT is the most advanced hardware system which has a range of functions apart from conventional router duties. Features include Kai Network, Daemon services, Wireless distribution systems, IPv6 and overclocking ability. Main Components:

There are 5 important and observable components of wireless routers. Brief overview of these components is given below:

Motherboard: This is the main part with which all the parts and accessories are attached.

SOC: System on chip is a combination of many small sized chips on the mother board.

WNIC: This is also a small chip present inside containing a small antenna. Wireless communication is impossible without this device.

Antennas: Antennas attached to a router are responsible for the distribution of wireless signals in the surroundings.

These are widely used on commercial and domestic levels. It’s a non replicable need of corporate sector, because intercommunication of various computer machines is necessary. Controlled distribution of information within a set of clients in a client-server environment is also indispensable.
