A cub scout den is a group of cub scouts in the same grade that work on awards, advancements and achievements for their rank. A den usually has 3-8 youth. They meet once or twice a month and attend.
Each rank is based on grades:
Lions - Kindergarten
Tigers - First Grade
Wolves - Second Grade
Bears - Third Grade
Webelo - Fourth Grade
Arrow of Light - Fifth Grade
Each rank works on unique skill sets, and each year they expand their skills.
A cub scout pack is what all of the dens from the different grades is called. The 'pack' or all the dens meet together, go on outings and other adventures together. Pack includes all the ranks, leaders and volunteers who work together to create a fun and engaging activities.
Once youth become Arrow of Light, they prepare to cross over to a Boy Scout Unit of their family's choice. Pack 27's Arrow of Light cross over during our annual Blue & Gold dinner. The ceremony of crossover celebrates the youth & parents of the Cub Scout. The Arrow of light patch stays with the youth through the rest of their scouting career.
Boy Scouts is an amazing program where youth have the opportunity to learn survival skills, use watercraft, use riffles/shotguns, hazardous weather skills, outdoor cooking, extreme camping, and much more. Each Boy Scout unit, but all follow the aims and methods of scouting. It's good to explore units to find the right fit for your family.
The scout uniform is a method of scouting, however, it is not required. We highly encourage uniforms to help youth feel part of a team and included. The uniform provides a clean and neat appearance and also gives youth confidence. The uniform helps people recognize the cub scout is part of the Boy Scouts of America/ Scouts BSA organization.
Our Pack 27 scouts should have, if possible:
Scout Shirt
Neckchief
Cub Scout Belt (for belt loops/awards)
Blue Pants/Jeans
Hat (optional)
Class A uniform is the full uniform as seen above based on each rank. Pack 27 allows jeans or blue pants as a substitute for uniform bottoms.
Class B, is the unofficial term used to describe Branded T-shirts, Pack Shirts, Camp Shirts, or any other Shirt that promotes scouting programs. These are worn during outdoor activities, camping, hikes, messy activities, and more. This can be worn as a substitute for Class A in the event a Class A is not available.
Cub Scout uniforms do not need to be in new condition. Uniforms are available at good wills, online, eBay and other stores for a fraction of the price of a new uniform. Hand me downs are encouraged. A scout is thrifty and we are eco-friendly. We celebrate utilizing used goods.
Pack 27 is 100% Parent Volunteer ran. All the volunteers must pass a background check and go through Youth Protection Training (YPT). Leaders are also offered a large array of training programs, monthly round tables, Scouting University Training and have access to a library of position trained programs online.
The head of a den is called a den leader. Some dens have multiple den leaders, co-leaders.
The head of a Cub Scout Pack is called a Cub Master. They lead the pack meetings, assist leaders, train den chiefs and is the master of ceremonies.
The Pack Committee includes a variety of positions that take care of certain projects, events, funding and manage the financial part of the scouting program.
Chartered Organization Representative (COR) is a liason between the chartered organization and the Pack.
Committee Chair oversees the committee
Treasurer manages the Pack's finances
Secretary manages communications, keeps records, and maintains pack roster.
Fundraising Chair helps create fundraising opportunities.
Advancement Chair is in charge of the awards, advancements, ranks, belt loops, patches and more.
Outdoor Chairperson helps create plans for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, exploration.
Den Leaders are in charge of grade specific dens.
Parent Volunteers are volunteers who assist when needed. They may help educate our youth on a specialized topic, plan an event, assist with an activity, help with fundraising, or any number of opportunities.
