What: Talk of properties is ubiquitous in ordinary life, the sciences, and philosophical theorising. Whenever we characterise something we attribute a property to that thing. We are intimately familiar with properties because they are interwoven with our lives and society. Yet philosophical investigations into properties have produced great disputes that have perplexed philosophers for centuries. In the twenty-first century, it continues to be widely discussed and taken seriously in the analytic tradition.
The occasion of this online workshop is the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Properties, edited by Anthony Fisher and Anna-Sofia Maurin. This collaborative work is part of the Routledge Handbook in Philosophy series. It collects new essays on this perennial topic and aims to survey and investigate the methodological, conceptual and ontological issues of properties as well as explore explanatory applications of properties in other domains of philosophy such as philosophy of science, mind, language, mathematics, aesthetics and the social world.
At this workshop the contributors to this volume will present their work-in-progress chapter for the volume.
