Effective Practice

& Pronto

Compiled from my experience using Pronto.

Live-Stream:

  • If you are plaining to live-stream your lecture, it is best to start simple.

  • Pronto is NOT Zoom. Do not screen-share, yet. At first, use it like Facebook Live. Facebook Live, and Pronto, enables us to be live with our students. They only interact with us via chat. Here are some tips:

  • Remind students to download the app to their mobile device. Pronto is protected behind our institution's firewall. If they do not have a mobile device, it is Canvas native. (*I love the App interface better than Canvas. But that's just me)

  • Norming the behavior during the class is important. I let my students know not to chat into the box until I open the lecture to questions. Encourage them to keep track of their questions.

  • When you begin class, ask students to type in their name. This is like a digital roll call sheet

  • Plan to record the lecture. The best part of remote learning is students can revisit the class and rewatch the fabulous and valuable lecture.

  • Periodically, stop yourself during your lecture and check in with the class. Ask them to send over the questions. However, let them know you are open to answer questions privately - you know... for the shy ones.

  • If you have a slide presentation, send them the presentation before class. They can launch the presentation on their computer. Then they can follow along while you speak.

  • I encourage students to have their mobile device & computer available. On the one side, they can have the presentation. and on the other side, they can have the Pronto live-stream.

    • For the students who do not have 2 devices, they can still access your lecture if you recorded it and review the slides while listening to your recorded livestream.

  • Don't hesitate to stick a paper behind you and draw on it as if it was your whiteboard in class while you're live-streaming. I am planing to take a picture of the drawings than sending it to them. I doodle when I lecture.

  • Use media in Canvas. Have them watch a movie during "class-time" and chat with you personally as they watch the film.

  • OR Explore groups. You can add groups of students to streamline chats between students. It's like creating learning groups or even support groups. Here are the steps. CLICK HERE

  • ( If you really want a whiteboard, I like Explain Everything. Then I share the video to students via Pronto. What is Explain Everything? CLICK HERE)

  • Keep in mind how much can be lectured on and not what we want. We are adapting to this new environment. Therefore, factor in time to allow students to ask questions in the end either to the class or individually.

NOT Comfortable Live-Streaming, yet you want to live, NO PROBLEM. Provide a lecture via Pronto chat.

  • It's totally fine to check in with your whole class via Pronto chat. Require them to type in their name to verify their participation. You can send directions via Pronto chat. Post on Canvas what the activity is. Or even send a file via file sharing in Pronto. Stay open in Pronto during the "class-time." Let the students know you're there while they are completing the activity.

Lifestyle Support. Set boundaries. Indicate what your hours of connection you will offer. Set your "Do Not Disturb" function on your phone or mute your class after a certain hour. Tap on your class on your side drawer - list of classes. Tap on your class title again at the top on your screen. That opens up your Group Settings. Click on Notification. Select Snooze. Select your choice. Enjoy your family! How To Put Pronto To Sleep

Overall Support: Be patient. Breathe. In the end, we have to stay healthy, connected and calm. Be human! Our students want to feel like we have their best interests in mind.

If you are aware of a student with a disability, make yourself available to them. Pronto does meet accessibility standards . However, take the extra step to ask them what would be a preferred from of communication. Reach out to DSPS for assistance. They can help.
