What will the future of dormitories look like?
Dormitories are here to stay.
Migrant workers are a crucial part of Singapore's economy, and housing them in dignified living spaces should be a key priority. COVID-19 has revealed how much more we can do for our migrant workers and has committed many to this cause. So how will dormitories in 2040 look? How may we ride broad global trends to make living spaces even better? Project Treehouse hopes to examine these questions in our report, Dorms 2040.
Dorms must be part of a national effort to make Singapore an attractive place to move to.
Taking up the opportunities of 2040 will incur costs, but there are benefits to all stakeholders that may justify the costs.
Opportunities + Willingness = Transformation
We first consolidated our learning points from various dormitory visits and closed-door conversations with various groups. Next, we imagined a changing Singapore in 2040 under 4 key scenarios: Growth, Discipline, Decline and Transformation.
Each of these scenarios were explored through the lenses of eight core drivers which we see changing over the next two decades. From there, we examined the impact on dormitories, and the opportunities for dormitories to grow and develop in 2040.
Technology, Culture, Work, Immigration, Demographics, Land, Health, Environment.
In the next two decades, these are the up-and-coming drivers of change. In Dorms: 2040, Project Treehouse examined how transformation in these 8 fields can offer new opportunities for dormitories.
