Program

Our focus:

While addressing social communication needs of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), this program will focus on intervention models that are evidence-based, naturalistic, inclusive, family-centered, culturally relevant, and interdisciplinary.

Project SCENES stands for: 

Social-Communication: Collaborating Early with Naturalistic Evidence-based Supports

Funding:

A total of 20 University of New Mexico students will receive $26,500 stipends (distributed across 4 regular and 1 summer semester) to complete graduate programs in speech-language pathology or special education. Project scholars may receive additional funding through required participation in UNM's LEND program. Cohorts accepted will be as follows: Fall 2021 start: 7 students; Fall 2022 start: 6 students; Fall 2023 start: 7 students. 

Requirements:

In addition to meeting degree program requirements, scholars will have specialized coursework, clinical placements, and leadership experiences (including participation in UNM's LEND program) that will prepare them to work with diverse families with young children with autism. Scholars that receive funding through Project Scenes must also commit to work with infants, toddlers, or children with disabilities/delays as an SLP, special education teacher, or developmental specialist for at least 2 years following graduation for each year in the program.
