Project Safe Streets

Project Safe Streets is an initiative to improve the safety of pedestrians in the city of Fremont. Through the use of crossing flags around especially busy crossings, we aim to reduce pedestrian accidents as well as car accident.

About the Project

To improve crossing-safety during rush hours around Fremont, we decided to do a variety of things, working with the City of Fremont. Some of the sub-parts to this project include:

  • Installing a system of bright orange crossing flags at specific crossings around Fremont. Pedestrians (and students) simply take a flag from one side of the crossing, cross the street, and then place the flag back. On either side of the crossing, there are two containers in which the flags will be placed. To account for the flags that may become lost over time, school PTAs as well as other bussinesses like retail stores have partnered with us to replace the flags.

  • Giving interactive presentations to elementary-school students to widen their knowledge about the importance of crossing safety and what they can do to stay safe while they walk to school and walk back from school.

  • Implementing surveys to measure the change in various aspects of crossing safety. Some of these include knowledge that children learn through the course of this project as well as satisfaction of parents as a result of this project.
