Project Portfolio

This portfolio contains information on many of the projects I have undertaken throughout middle and high school. A motorized surfboard, which I created from scratch, is the most comprehensive project in my portfolio, and is the centerpiece of this website. The process of designing and building the motorized surfboard and the other projects featured in this portfolio have taught me countless lessons in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through experience. My parents' refusal to purchase fun (yet expensive) things I have had on my various wish lists over the years has driven me to become a maker. I know that if I want my dreams to become reality, I have to get creative and learn to design and build them myself.
My passion for building started when I was very young. I would carry a well worn, red spiral notepad everywhere so I could write down and draw out ideas the instant the inspiration for invention struck. I filled up the pages with devices ranging from a tree climbing suit, inspired by watching squirrels, to ideas for improving a smart watch. Some of my ideas seemed a bit far fetched to my family but, not one to be discouraged, I embarked upon making several of my ideas into reality. One of the first things I made myself was a cannon that used hair spray, as fuel, to launch chunks of potato across my backyard. As I got older, my projects began to get more complex and technical. Instead of making things up as I went along, I began to plan out my approach using Blender and Fusion 360; using math and physics to optimize my designs. I found that when my brother and dad would decide that a project was too complicated to work, or impossible to make in our basement, their doubt would motivate me to successfully complete it, and prove them wrong in the process. To me, the satisfaction of taking a raw piece of wood or metal and transforming it into something functional (or just fun) using tools and ideas is unmatched, especially if it has a positive impact on the people around me. In my attempts to bring my ideas to fruition, I have had some triumphs and some disappointments. One thing I have learned is that no unsuccessful venture to make an idea a reality is a true failure because, in trying, I always learn something new and useful to be applied towards my career and my life. I look forward to continuing to pursue my passion for building in college and throughout my life.
