The Problem
Mental illness is the third most common disability in the Philippines. Around 6 million Filipinos are estimated to live with depression and/or anxiety, making the Philippines the country with the third highest rate of mental health problems in the Western Pacific Region.
Findings
Students have been aided by the capacity of art making to restore healthy functioning and provide mastery amidst feelings of helplessness.
Recent research suggests that music engagement not only shapes our personal and cultural identities but also plays a role in mood regulation.
My Solution
The purpose of my project is to provide an outlet for emotional regulation, improving the mental health of children in Baguio and Bayombong. In order to do this, I will collect art supplies, sheet music, and letters from my local community. After they are collected, I will send the items to the Philippines, collaborating with PHI City Director Kayla to include the art supplies in the art kits she sends to Baguio hospitals and Bayombong high schools.
Goal
My goal is to positively impact children in Baguio and Bayombong. With the art and music supplies, I hope that children will be able to express their emotions more freely and learn about different ways to cope with their mental health.
