The foxfire flows through the air stronger than anywhere else.
Centuries of secrets buried in history lie beneath the modern world.
And in the midst of all that, a boy was born.
Not like this place was new to him.
He just didn't know it yet.
But he was no ordinary human.
The foxfire was strong in him from the beginning.
However, with such strong abilities, it became hard to hide it all.
Those hungry for power wanted to create their own version of it, no matter the consequences.
And not everything buried stays beneath the ground.
The kid never asked for any of this.
Most people could only imagine being sensitive to foxfire. But not him.
But when you're chosen by the goddess of the fox spirits herself at birth to be the one to finish something you started in your past life, there's not much else you can do.
Kojiro is an 18 year old student who loves parkour and climbing. He comes from a family who has worshipped Inari Okami and the kitsune for generations, with no idea that he himself was more than just a worshipper to the spirits since the day he was born.
Growing up, he always wanted to succeed in his own way instead of following everyone else the expected way. Eventually, he would be given exactly that chance to do so when he met Kiyoko, the fox spirit that was his pet 400 years ago in the past life.
He always wondered why he just had a strong feeling about how things would turn out before they happened as a kid. How he was able to gain strength at abnormally fast rates compared to others, or how foxes were weirdly drawn to him. When Kiyoko reunited with him, they instantly clicked, as a result of the foxfire that Inari personally put in him at birth. He was just never able to control it properly, as he didn't know about it.
Kiyoko is a 400 year old fox spirit. She was the pet fox of Kojiro in the past life 400 years ago, showing unnatural senses and awareness even when she was just a regular fox. Having no idea she'd eventually ascend to become a kitsune, she acted out of instinct and guided a group of fighters against the dark kitsune, helping them seal away the spirit.
Despite being a benevolent kitsune, Kiyoko has a sassy attitude that she doesn't even try to hide from anyone. Living inside Kojiro's body, she constantly backseat commentates on his life, which annoys Kojiro but also makes him laugh.
Our company is also named after Kiyoko, since she is a fan favorite character!
The goddess of the fox spirits and prosperity herself, Inari Okami serves no side, but exists to maintain balance in the foxfire. She gave Kojiro her foxfire at his birth, knowing that he would ultimately be the one she trusted to defeat Kurogitsune. Residing in the Shinto realm behind the Torii Gates, Inari controls and guides the other fox spirits who act as her messengers, crossing over between the human and spiritual realms.
Based on the actual Japanese mythology.
Once a human scientist who sought to create artificial foxfire after witnessing its abilities from Kojiro, Pyro-Kitsune was the result of an experiment that gave him exactly what he wanted...but at the cost of his own body. Now he's a living foxfire battery, able to absorb foxfire while using iron to control the power. While his new body is physically enhanced, his mind proves that foxfire was never meant to be controlled by those who were not foxfire sensitive to begin with.
Sealed by a group of kitsune worshippers 400 years ago, Kurogitsune has waited centuries in his burial site beneath a mall claimed to be haunted by a fox spirit (I wonder who), though no solid evidence has ever been captured. Although he is unable to turn the tides in the balance between light and dark foxfire, many report an uneasy yet tempting feeling that lingers in the mall, which they immediately connected to the hauntings. It was all dismissed as psychological tricks, but all that changed when an innocent human looking for the source of temptation freed something that was not meant to be freed.
One of the Three Terrible Yokai and the strongest and oldest evil kitsune to exist in history, Tamamo once almost took down a whole empire on her own by tricking the emperor. She was caught and turned into a stone that killed anyone who went near it, but centuries later, a monk exorcised the spirit out of the stone and broke it. Her current whereabouts are unknown, but the kitsune (including Kurogitsune, even) still live in fear of her name.
