JOInt eNergy absorption with Double-Double Design
An FCT PEX project - ref. 2023.15692.PEX
The main objective of JOIN3D is to promote the safe and effective use of Double-Double laminates, capitalizing on their more efficient design and potential for lightweight construction. We aim to contribute to the understanding of the energy absorption capabilities of double-double composite joints with respect to standard construction and to further develop analytical and numerical prediction tools to assist in their design.
When compared to standard composite laminates, do double-double laminates present superior energy absorption capabilities, that could thus contribute to weight reduction in the presence of bolted joints?
How does the 3D composite joint failure envelope of standard and double-double laminates compare?
Can high-fidelity models accurately predict the failure load, energy absorption and overall failure mode
Can composite joints be designed based on a macro-scale simplified joint model and if so, how effective are these models compared to direct detailed numerical simulation/experiments?
