ProjectCSGirls is a nonprofit organization created to encourage middle school girls to get involved in STEM-related activities early on, particularly computer science and technology, in order to close the gender gap in STEM careers. More information about the parent program can be found below.
Currently, the Portland chapter focuses on developing a basic understanding of Unix commands and Linux systems (we will be working in Ubuntu for these workshops) in preparation for coding and cybersecurity practices. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all workshops will be held remotely.
Unix commands are utilized in navigating Linux systems. Basic knowledge of Unix commands are needed when navigating terminals when working with many programming languages. Additionally, if the student chooses to delve deeper into more specialized area of computer science, such as cybersecurity or any low-level software jobs, knowledge of Unix/bash commands and Linux systems in general becomes crucial. Some computer science courses in college require knowledge of Unix to help students succeed in the other courses further down along the line.
ProjectCSGirls runs the largest nation-wide technology competition for middle school girls to drive girls to participate in computing and technology. Along with this, they run international chapters for middle school girls to explore various branches of computer science and find like-minded individuals.
