Oobleck is made of cornstarch and water, a mixture that behaves like both solid and liquid depending on how you interact with it. We use this to introduce the phases of matter to students.
(Warning: This is a messy experiment).
This bubbly experiment is sure to get students excited about acids and bases! We give a quick introduction to what acids and bases are before diving into the experiment. Students are asked to mix vinegar and baking soda in a bottle capped with a balloon and see what happens.
We demonstrate how forces, Bernoulli's principle, and gravity all work together in aerodynamics in this simple yet informative experiment. Students will make paper airplanes to see these ideas in action.
By rubbing balloons against various surfaces, students learn about negative and positive electrical charges and the atomic explanation behind it.
DIY lava lamps are a great way to introduce the concepts of density and hydrophobicity to students. They will get to explore the way different compounds interact with water while making their very own lava lamp!
This is a quick and easy experiment that we usually do with our kindergarten and 1st grade classes where we teach about solutions and different types of mixtures. Students get to arrange Skittles in any pattern they like on a plate and we will go around and add hot water so that they can see what happens to the colors as the Skittles mix with the water.
Tutoring

EVENTS
In addition to classroom visits and tutoring, we also provide educational demos at events!
Project Catalyst at the UC Davis Mind Institute's Fall Festival and Trunk-or-Treat!
Davis Senior High School Women in STEM's Mathalon and STEM Fair!
Our next generation of scientists in action!
Tabling at our very own UC Davis Picnic Day! We made oobleck and paper planes with our future scientists! 🥼🧪
We also tabled at Primero Grove, on-campus housing at UC Davis!
