Welcome to Project Con Brio!
The mission of Project Con Brio is to offer high-quality piano lessons for free to underprivileged children who may not be able to afford music education on their own. Our aim is not only to assist low-income families but also to unite young volunteer pianists under a shared cause. Our ultimate goal is to introduce kids to an art form that is often considered expensive and provide them with an additional avenue of self-expression, enabling them to enhance their personal artistry.
Hi! My name is Bethany Cheung and I started playing the piano at 6 years old. Since then, under the tutelage of Professor Myong-joo Lee, my most recent competition accomplishments include second places in both the American Protégé International Piano & Strings Competition and State Finals of the Contemporary Music Competition sponsored by CAPMT (California Association of Professional Music Teachers) in 2022 and 2021 respectively. My other competition successes include first place winner in the Musical Arts Competition of Orange County (2019), Diamond Bar Performing Arts Contest (2019), and gold medals at the MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California) Theme Festivals (2017, 2018). I performed publicly at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum in 2019 and participated in my school orchestra the same year. During the summer after COVID-19, I attended Music Fest Perugia and had a solo appearance with the Virtuosi Brunensis Orchestra at Sala dei Notari in Italy. The following summer, I performed at Carnegie Hall. In August 2023, I traveled to Vancouver to participate in Vancouver Piano Sessions, playing in both a Spotlight masterclass and a Gala concert at Christ Church Cathedral. Throughout my musical career, I have performed in masterclasses for prestigious pianists such as Wayne Weng, Steven Spooner, Ning An, and Nino Merabishvili. Aside from my musical pursuits, I also enjoy teaching children, having worked with kids at various locations, and look forward to continuing my passions with Project Con Brio!
Hi! My name is Sophie Tsai and I have been playing piano from a very young age. I have participated in CM testing until the Panel level and have competed in various competitions such as MTAC Solo and SYMF. Despite not having a prolific competition experience, I am very passionate about piano (and working with children!) and hope to share the joy of music to the community through Project Con Brio.
Hi! My name is Andrea Lin, and I began my musical journey at the age of five. I began my studies with Professor Joyce Lee and, in 2020, continued my musical journey at the Colburn School under the guidance of Professor Jeffery Lavner. Over the years, I have been fortunate to earn recognition in numerous competitions, including first prize at the 2024 Junior Bach Festival Complete Works Audition, second prize at the 2024 Southwestern Youth Music Festival Concerto Category and Open Category, and first prize along with the Repertoire Award at the 2022 Contemporary Festival. Earlier, I also earned first prize at both the branch and regional levels of the Junior Bach Festival Competition. Alongside these accomplishments, I completed the Certificate of Merit (CM) testing annually until transitioning into Colburn, where I continue to grow through weekly recitals, seasonal workshops, and masterclasses. Looking ahead, I am preparing to compete in the 2025 Contemporary Festival, Junior Bach Festival Competition, and Concerto Competition. Beyond performance, I find joy in teaching younger students, as I believe music is a language of confidence and creativity that should be shared. Through my work with Project Con Brio, I hope to pass on my passion for piano and inspire the next generation of musicians.
Hi! My name is Shannon Tsai, and piano has been a vital part of my life since a young age. While I may not have extensive experience in competitions, I’m deeply passionate about music, and I think being able to share the joy of music and music education with children is wonderful. I have completed CM through Level 10 with branch and state honors, and regularly participate in the Bach or Baroque Festival, as well as the Romantic and Contemporary Festivals. In addition to performing, I enjoy exploring different teaching methods and finding creative ways to engage young learners. I’m very excited to work with kids and hope to help many of them build a meaningful connection with music. I’m also incredibly grateful and looking foward to be working with the Project Con Brio team!
