For glasses wearers, the PROHEAR Electronic Shooting Ear takes the top spot because its specialized gel seals and rapid electronic reaction time solve the pressure and clarity issues that standard muffs create. The runner-up is the PROHEAR 016 series, which wins for those who prefer a purely passive solution with a compact, foldable design that fits easily into any range bag.
• PROHEAR Electronic Shooting Ear — best for active shooters needing situational awareness; pick this if you require sound amplification and ultra-fast noise suppression to hear whispers while blocking gunshots.
• PROHEAR 016 (Gel) — best for all-day comfort with eyewear; pick this if you need maximum passive protection without electronics and want the added benefit of soft gel pads to eliminate headband pressure.
• PROHEAR 016 (Slim Green) — best for general outdoor use and hunting; pick this if you want a lightweight, slim profile that stays out of the way during long sessions in the field.
• PROHEAR 016 (Slim D Black) — best for versatile workshop and range work; pick this if you prefer a classic dark finish with a secure, adjustable fit for various head shapes.

• PROHEAR HC01 — best for upgrading existing tactical headsets; pick this if you already own compatible hearing protection and just need a softer, more comfortable outer cover.
• PROHEAR 016 (2-Pack) — best for families or dual-range setups; pick this if you need two identical pairs for partners or as a backup set ready for immediate use.
This model stands apart immediately because it is not just a pair of noise-canceling cups; it is an active electronic system designed for the modern shooter. The core of its appeal lies in the GEP02 Gel Ear Seals, which are engineered specifically to distribute pressure away from the temples where glasses frames usually rest. This design choice directly addresses the headache-inducing clamping force common in traditional earmuffs, allowing you to wear them for hours without the pain that forces most people to take them off mid-session.
Beyond comfort, the electronic capabilities offer a significant advantage in situational awareness. The device features a lightning-fast reaction time that suppresses sudden loud noises instantly while amplifying ambient sounds like footsteps or rustling leaves. This 5x sound amplification feature means you can hear faint environmental cues clearly, which is critical for both hunting and competitive shooting scenarios. The vertical volume adjustment button adds a layer of tactile control, letting you fine-tune sensitivity without accidentally muting the world when your hands are busy.
The trade-off here is complexity and power management. Unlike simple foam muffs, this unit requires two AAA batteries to function, meaning you must always check the battery status before heading out to the range. The LED indicator helps alert you when power is low, but relying on electronics introduces a point of failure that passive models simply do not have. If you prefer a "set it and forget it" tool that never needs charging or battery changes, this might feel like over-engineering, though for serious shooters, the clarity it provides is often worth the extra setup.
When I look at the PROHEAR 016 with the gel pads, the primary selling point is its commitment to comfort for eyewear users. The manufacturer explicitly designed these soft gel seals to reduce pressure points caused by glasses arms, creating a seal that blocks harmful noise without digging into your skin. This makes it an ideal choice for anyone who wears prescription glasses or sunglasses and has previously struggled to find protective gear that doesn't leave red marks or cause migraines after thirty minutes.
The construction focuses on passive protection with a high Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) that meets rigorous safety standards. The housing is made from sound-dampening composites that effectively block dangerous decibels, while the memory foam inside the gel pads ensures a closed head seal even if your glasses shift slightly. The low-profile cups feature cut-outs specifically shaped to clear rifle stocks and shotgun barrels, preventing the muffs from interfering with your aim or equipment handling.
However, because this is a passive model, it does not amplify quiet sounds or allow you to converse naturally without removing the muffs. You rely entirely on the physical barrier to stop noise, which is excellent for pure hearing conservation but lacks the electronic versatility of the active models. It is a straightforward, robust tool for those who prioritize silence and comfort over audio enhancement, making it a reliable workhorse for daily range visits or extended hunting trips where battery life is a concern.

This variation of the 016 series swaps the gel pads for ultra-soft cushioned foam, offering a slightly different tactile experience while maintaining the same slim, low-profile silhouette. The green coloring is not just aesthetic; it serves a functional purpose for hunters who want their gear to blend subtly into wooded environments rather than standing out as a bright black object. Despite the color change, the engineering remains focused on keeping the muffs compact so they do not get caught on branches or interfere with movement in dense brush.
The wide ear cups and thick padding on the headband work together to ensure a snug fit that distributes weight evenly across the top of your head. This design prevents the "hot spots" that often develop with tighter, less padded models, allowing for extended wear during long days of tracking game or working in noisy yards. The folding mechanism makes it incredibly portable, fitting easily into pockets or small side bags when you aren't actively using them.
The main compromise with this version is the lack of the gel technology found in other variants. While the foam is soft, some users with very specific frame types might still find the pressure slightly higher than the dedicated gel versions. Additionally, the standard foam pads may need replacement sooner than the more durable gel options if used heavily every day. Still, for the average user seeking a balance of portability, camouflage, and solid protection, this model hits the sweet spot.
The D Black iteration brings back the classic, understated look that many professionals prefer for work sites and urban ranges. Like its siblings, it features the slim cut-out earcups designed to clear firearm stocks effortlessly, ensuring that your vision and aim remain unobstructed. The black rubberized coating provides a premium feel that resists fading and wear, even when exposed to sun and sweat over many seasons.
Comfort remains a central pillar of this design, with a padded headband that adjusts smoothly to accommodate different head sizes and shapes. The adjustable nature of the band means you can tighten it for a secure fit during vigorous activity or loosen it slightly for a more relaxed stance, though the goal is always a firm seal against the ears. This adaptability makes it a safe bet for anyone sharing gear with family members or friends who might have different head dimensions.
As with the other passive models, there is no electronic assistance, so you will need to remove the muffs to communicate verbally or listen to subtle environmental sounds. The focus here is purely on durability and reliability. The heavy-duty construction suggests this unit is built to withstand the rigors of daily use in workshops, construction sites, or on the range without showing signs of wear quickly. It is a no-nonsense piece of equipment for those who value longevity and consistent performance over flashy features.
This version distinguishes itself with a focus on maintainability and cost-effectiveness. The standout feature is the snap-in ear cushion design, which allows you to replace the foam pads easily if they become worn or dirty over time. This modularity extends the lifespan of the product significantly, as you do not need to buy a whole new pair of earmuffs just because the cushions have lost their plushness. For frequent users, this is a practical consideration that saves money in the long run.
The physical attributes remain consistent with the rest of the 016 line: a compact, folding design and a slim profile that keeps the muffs out of the way. The black finish offers a sleek appearance suitable for both professional and recreational settings. The rubberized exterior ensures a good grip and resistance to abrasion, making it durable enough for rough handling in a cluttered range bag or toolbox.
The trade-off is similar to the other passive models regarding audio isolation versus amplification. You get excellent noise reduction, but you lose the ability to hear the environment clearly without taking the muffs off. However, for someone who prioritizes ease of maintenance and a solid, dependable pair of passive protectors, this model offers exceptional value. It proves that you don't need complex electronics to get high-quality hearing protection if the basic materials and design are done right.
Choosing the orange variant is primarily about visibility and safety in mixed-use environments. If you work in areas where you might be near machinery operators or other workers, the bright color ensures your earmuffs are easy to spot if you drop them or if someone needs to locate you quickly. The underlying technology remains unchanged, offering the same NRR rating and slim form factor that defines the series.
The lightweight construction ensures that the bright color does not come at the cost of comfort or portability. The wide ear cups and soft padding continue to provide a secure fit that feels gentle on the ears even after prolonged use. The folding capability allows you to stash the bright orange muffs in a pocket or bag without them taking up much space, making them convenient for travel between job sites or hunting locations.
Like all passive models in this lineup, this one relies solely on physical barriers to dampen sound. There is no electronic amplification or communication feature built-in. The decision to choose this over a black or camo model comes down to personal preference for visibility and style. If you appreciate a pop of color in your gear or need that visual cue for safety reasons, this version delivers the same core protection with a distinct aesthetic edge.
The HC01 is fundamentally different from the rest of the list because it is not a standalone pair of earmuffs; it is a modular cover designed to upgrade existing headsets. It fits a wide array of popular brands including Peltor, Howard Leight, and Walkers, acting as a universal comfort booster for your current gear. If you already own a high-quality electronic headset but find the original ear pads too thin or uncomfortable, this mesh foam spacer adds a necessary layer of cushioning.
The tight needlework and Mil-spec bartacks ensure that the cover is sturdy and won't tear under stress. The D-ring attachment point adds a unique utility, allowing you to hang the cover on a belt loop or bag strap when not in use, keeping it accessible and organized.
The limitation here is obvious: you cannot use this product unless you already own a compatible headset. It does not provide the initial hearing protection on its own. However, for owners of expensive tactical gear who are frustrated by discomfort, this is a transformative accessory. It breathes new life into older headsets, improving comfort and extending the usable life of your investment without the cost of buying a brand-new pair of muffs.
Buying two pairs of the 016 in one package is a smart move for couples, families, or anyone who frequently shares gear. Whether you are taking your spouse to the range or lending a pair to a friend, having a second set eliminates the waiting time and hygiene concerns associated with swapping single-use items. The packaging includes a carrying bag for each pair, ensuring that both sets stay clean and organized when stored in a vehicle or ammo box.
The specifications mirror the single-pack versions perfectly, offering the same NRR rating, slim profile, and adjustable headbands. The combination of black and brown colors in this pack provides variety, allowing you to distinguish between your set and a partner's set at a glance. The durable construction means both pairs will likely last for years, making this a cost-effective strategy for regular shooters who want redundancy in their safety gear.
The only potential downside is the upfront quantity if you are a solo user who rarely lends gear. Carrying two pairs might seem unnecessary if you never share, but the inclusion of two carrying bags actually enhances portability, giving you the option to keep one set in the car and one at home. For anyone looking to build a collection of reliable passive protectors, this bundle offers convenience and value that single units cannot match.
