OPEN promotes mutual exchange of culture and provides free access to teaching and learning materials which can be reused, adapted, and shared with others.

Our work supports K-12 students outside of the traditional school day. National Medical Fellowships (NMF) service-learning programs provide special opportunities for students to work hands-on to enhance health care delivery in underrepresented communities. These programs match students with mentors, often eminent NMF alumni, and focus on areas of critical clinical/public health need.

The ALLIANT scholarship, established in 2018, has transitioned to become a service-learning program in 2023. Scholars have the opportunity to complete a mentored research paper focused on a health care issue of their choice, with the goal of improving or extending life, or of healing on a community, national or global level.

Established in 2021, Johnson & Johnson has partnered with NMF to develop the Alliance for Inclusion in Medicine Scholarship Program. This is an innovative, three-year service-learning program designed to expose high performing underrepresented in medicine medical students with analytical skill sets that will prepare them to become future clinician and research leaders. In addition, the program will expose students to various functions within the pharmaceutical, medical devices and health care industries where physicians play a key role.

Alternative Learning Programs and Schools (ALPS) are safe orderly, caring and inviting learning environments that assist students with overcoming challenges that may place them "at-risk" of academic failure. The goal of each program and school is to provide a rigorous education while developing individual student strengths, talents, and interests.

The 1995 North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation requiring that the Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to evaluate all alternative learning programs across the state, without regard to funding source. An alternative learning program is defined as:

a school or program that serves students at any level, serves suspended or expelled students, serves students whose learning styles are better served in an alternative program... or provides individualized programs outside of a standard classroom setting in a caring atmosphere in which students learn the skills necessary to redirect their lives. ALPs are limited to programs that also meet the following criteria:

An alternative School is one option for an alternative learning program. It serves at-risk students and has an organizational designation based on the DPI assignment of an official school code.
