Villa del Tellaro
The large Roman villa from the late imperial period, on the right bank of the Tellaro river in the municipality of Noto, discovered at the beginning of the 70s of the last century following clandestine excavations, extended below a farm from the 18th-19th century.
The central body is organized around a peristyle, surrounded by residential rooms, of which only those on the north and south sides are preserved.
All the rooms were decorated with floor mosaics, among which stand out for the complexity of composition and pictorial values, the representation of the scene of the redemption of the body of Hector and the hunting scenes, arranged around a seated female figure, perhaps the personification of the Africa. The mosaics, dated around the middle of the 4th century AD, find the most immediate comparisons in those of Piazza Armerina and some centers of Proconsular Africa and are probably the work of craftsmen of African artistic taste, with Roman figurative components.
