Writes in opposition Editor, The Record: I wish to take exception with your guest editorial of March 2, 1971 from the AAA Motorist entitled “Peace Symbol?” First, let us get the facts straight. The designer for the peace symbol or trademark was Gerald Holtom of Great Britain for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The design represents the semaphore for the initials “N” and “D”. The broken cross represents the death of man, and the circle the unborn child. Most who display the symbol do so as an outward and visable sign of their support of peace; for the elimination of war. Some also refer to it as the “Ban the Bomb” symbol – the broken cross representing the B-52 bomber, a carrier of nuclear weapons. Yes, the “Peace Symbol” is not something that is the product of today’s restless youth. It is used openly by those seeking peace and who would encourage others to help make a peaceful coexistence in today’s world. If in fact the identical symbol is used “as a central part of the national symbolism of communist Russia” as the author stated, such use does not indicate that the communists are winning the battle for the minds of our youth. It simply indicates that the communists have a different meaning or interpretation for the “symbol” than those who use it to advocate peace. If in fact the identical symbol is an anti-Christ symbol, its use is not intended to be interpreted as such by those who openly display it as a symbol of peace. For, as those who study communications will state, meanings are not found in words or symbols, they are found in people. One person’s interpretation of a word or symbol is based upon his own experienced and his interpretations of them. The swastika (also a broken cross) might serve to illustrate this concept. Those who suffered the terrors of Nazi Germany will have one meaning or interpretation of that symbol. Now are you ready for a real shock? In another country it is known as a good luck symbol! One can read into the peace symbol anything he so desires. But he should not offend or insult others’ sincere interpretations. The blatant inferences in your guest editorial that those displaying the “Peace Symbol” are therefore being won over by the Communists or are anti-Christ is an insult to one’s intelligence and honest sincerity in publicly displaying the “Peace Symbol.” If my display has offended those who give a different meaning to the symbol, I humbly apologize. Such broad attacks by inference serve only to confuse and divide. Let us instead unite and understand. Peace. DAVID S. CAMPBELL Stroudsburg
