TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERTITY OF THE PHILIPPINES(TUP) SYSTEM
THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES (1901-1910)
-The Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) originated as the Manila Trade School (MTS) in 1901. Established under Act No. 74 of the United States Philippine Commission, its purpose was to provide Filipinos with vocational training. Initially located near Ateneo de Manila in Intramuros, the school later relocated to the Exposicion Regional de Filipinos on Calle Padre Faura, and subsequently to the City Shops on Calle Arroceros in 1907.
-The curriculum comprised industrial courses such as carpentry, English, telegraphy, machine shop work, furniture making, wood carving, boat building, plumbing, blacksmithing, and mechanical and architectural drawing. These courses, offered at the primary school level, catered to adult students seeking vocational skills.
-In 1978, the Philippine College of Advanced Technology (PCAT) was elevated to university status and renamed the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP) under Presidential Decree No. 1518.
-In This decree established TUP's mandate to provide higher and advanced education and training in vocational, technical, industrial, and technological fields, awarding certificates, diplomas, and degrees. Furthermore, TUP was charged with fostering progressive leadership in applied research and development, promoting the use of indigenous materials in production, facilitating technology transfer in rural areas, and supporting the growth of small and medium-sized industries.
