Political Ideologies in Modern Turkey
This course aims at comprehending how migration flows impact the nation-states and the status of citizenship at a global level with particular focus on Europe. It will progress by focusing on the following five themes:
1.modern citizenship
2. postwar migration flows
3. impact of migration flows on host societies
4. refugee flows
5. border politics
This course, first, presents the students with the genealogy and evolution of the concept of modern citizenship. Secondly, migration flows especially to Europe in the post-war era are reviewed. Thirdly, the impact of these flows on host societies and the changing meaning of citizenship are studied. Fourthly, the focus moves to the distinguishing features of the migration patterns of asylum seekers and refugees. The fifth dimension of this course sheds light on the social and political movements triggered by border politics.
POLS 473 Political Theory II
This course aims at the comprehension of the origins and evolution of contemporary political ideologies, their current manifestations as well as their points of intersection. It will progress by focusing on the following ten themes:
1. Meaning and genealogy of the concept of ideology
2. Background to the study of ideologies
3. Liberalism
4. Conservatism
5. Socialism
6. Nationalism
7. Fascism and National Socialism
8. Feminism
9. Environmentalism and Ecologism
POLS 457 and POLS 557 The Politics of Authoritarian Regimes
This course aims at the comprehension of the dynamics of authoritarian regimes at the global level. It focuses not only on the cross-regional manifestations of new authoritarian regimes in the 21st century but also reviews the theoretical and historical literature about their antecedents in the 20th century.
The classes progress through the following seven themes:
1. What is democracy and what is authoritarianism?
2. Transitions to democratic and authoritarian regimes in historical perspective
3. Varieties of authoritarian regimes
4. Strategies for survival
5. Totalitarianism and fascism
6. New authoritarian regimes: cross-regional comparisons
7. Opposition in authoritarian regimes
