The American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) sponsors an annual mathematics competition called the Student Mathematics League (SML). The SML is a national competition that is open to any student who has not earned a two-year degree and has not reached junior standing (or higher) at a four-year institution. For information concerning eligibility for awards and prizes, visit the official AMATYC SML website.
The SML consists of two multiple-choice formatted exams (with five response choices for each question). The first exam occurs during the fall semester and the second during the spring semester. Contestants have one hour to complete twenty problems. They will earn two points for each correct response and receive a half-point penalty for each incorrect response. Interestingly, note that strategic guessing (that is, guessing after eliminating one or more incorrect choices) may improve a contestant's expected score.
In the 2023-2024 academic year, members of The Mathematics Club at San Jacinto College aim to compete in the SML. To prepare for the competition, students may practice with official previous exams posted on the AMATYC page. A few of these are linked below. Visit this page later in the year for more exam solutions and tips.
