Autonomous Driving Research for Unstructured Terrain Using UGVs
The Intelligent Systems Laboratory is conducting research on autonomous driving of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) in unstructured terrains. UGVs are autonomous vehicles capable of performing missions across a wide range of fields, including defense, agriculture, industry, and logistics. These vehicles typically rely on multiple sensors to perceive their surroundings and plan driving paths.
Conventional autonomous driving systems have primarily been developed for well-maintained road environments. However, in unstructured environments—such as off-road areas on the outskirts of cities, rugged terrain, tunnels, and canyons—existing map data and GNSS signals are often unavailable or unreliable, making autonomous navigation extremely challenging. Our research focuses on enabling UGVs to drive efficiently and autonomously in such environments, where map data and GNSS signals cannot be used. To support path planning and navigation in unstructured terrain, we utilize non-contact optical 3D depth cameras to acquire detailed 3D terrain shape information. Based on this data, we extract surface features such as slope, curvature, and step height to generate 3D maps, which are then used for autonomous path planning. By analyzing these terrain features, we identify drivable areas and establish real-time path planning strategies that consider the UGV’s driving power, climbing capabilities, and other vehicle performance factors. This enables UGVs to navigate safely and reliably even in complex, off-road environments, while maintaining efficient and robust autonomous driving performance.
Through this research, the Intelligent Systems Laboratory aims to enhance the environmental perception capabilities of UGVs operating in GPS-denied and mapless unstructured terrains. Additionally, our work contributes to practical solutions in autonomous mapping and overall driving performance, ultimately expanding the potential applications of UGVs across various industries.
