Dr. Uchôa-Filho is a professor in the Department of Telecommunications, Division of Electronics Engineering, Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Brazil.
He received the BSc. degree from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), in 1989, the MSc. degree from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), in 1992, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Notre Dame, U.S.A., in 1996, all in electrical engineering. From 1997 to 1999, he held a Postdoctoral position at UNICAMP; from 2000 to 2023, he was a professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina; from 2009 to 2010, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Sydney, Australia; in 2017, he was a senior researcher at CNAM and CentraleSupélec, France.
He is an IEEE Senior Member and a Senior Member of the Brazilian Telecommunications Society (SBrT). He has been serving as an editorial board member for several journals; he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Brazilian Telecommunications Society (2003-2004), anAssociate Editor of Physical Communication (Elsevier) (2016-2018) and Digital Signal Processing (Elsevier) (2016-2018); he serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Wireless Communications Letters (2025-). He has also been involved in the organization of several conferences; he was General Chair of the SBrT'2020, Track Co-Chair of Fundamentals and PHY of the IEEE PIMRC 2019, and TPC Co-Chair of the ISWCS'2024.
His research interests include channel coding, signal processing for communications, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, multiple access techniques, 5G/6G systems.
