Academic and Administrations

P. Balasubramaniam (1967) post-graduated in 1989, subsequently completed a Master of Philosophy in 1990 and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in 1994 in the field of Mathematics with a specialization in Control Theory from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, Tamilnadu, India. In August 2022, he completed his Doctor of Science (D.Sc) in the Department of Mathematics, The Gandhigram Rural Institute-Deemed to be University (GRI-DTBU), Gandhigram, Dindigul, Tamilnadu. Since Feb. 1997, he has been working in the Department of Mathematics, GRI-DTBU. He has more than 28 years of experience in teaching and research. Currently, he is the Professor of the Department of Mathematics and Director of the International Programme, GRI-DTBU, Gandhigram, Dindigul. Under his administration as a Head of the Department for more than nine years, the Department obtained several credentials, including UGC-Special Assistance Programme grants, DST-FIST grants, and NBHM library grants. As Registrar of the same University for three years from 2014 to 2017, the Institute attained 12B status, 'A' grade under 3rd cycle by NAAC, and status on Institute under UGC review visit.

Area of Specializations

His research interests include Control Theory, Stochastic Differential Equations, Soft Computing, Stability Analysis, Cryptography, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Image Processing, and Quantum Computing.

Leadership and Academic Training Attended

He has attended the three-week Leadership for Academicians Programme (LEAP), a national Initiative for Leadership Development in Higher Educational Institutions by MHRD, during 4-23, Feb. 2019, conducted by NIT- Trichy, IIIT- Sri City, and NTU-Singapore. Recently, he completed a certificate course on Comprehensive Online Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) conducted by i-Hub (A Government of Gujarat Enterprise) from July 6, 2020, to September 14, 2020.

Publications   

He has published more than 280 research papers in various SCI/SCIE journals with good impact factors with Scopus H-index 54. To his credit, he edited more than ten books/Journal Volumes, including three international conference proceedings in Springer publications, out of which the proceeding published in 2012 entitled "Mathematical Modelling and Scientific Computation" has a total of 79,153 chapter downloads and it was a top 25% most downloaded ebooks in 2018. Also, he edited a volume published in 2011 entitled “Control, Computation and Information Systems” which has a total of 30,675 chapter downloads. It was among the top 50% of most downloaded ebooks in 2018.

Organizational Experiences & Invited Talks

He has presented 7 papers at international and 2 papers at national academic conferences and has published 17 articles in conference proceedings. He has organized 4 conferences, 3 workshops, and 1 symposium at the national level. Also, he has organized 7 conferences, 1 seminar, and 3 workshops at the International level in GRI-DTBU, Gandhigram as a chairperson and convener. He delivered 85 invited talks at the National level and 35 invited talks at the international level.

Editorialships

He is serving as a reviewer of more than 50 SCI journals and a member of the editorial board of 5 Journals. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal Modern Instrumentation, Scientific Research Publishing Inc. (SCIRP), USA, and Associate Editor of Neural Processing Letters, Springer, Germany, International Journal of Intelligent Autonomous Systems, Rational Publication, International Journal of Innovative Computing, Information and Control, and Advances in Difference Equations.


Ph. D Guidance, Evaluation, and Collaborative Research


Under his guidance as a supervisor, 37 scholars have completed their Ph.D. degrees in the field of Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science & Applications. As co-supervisor, one scholar completed a Ph.D. degree at the University of Malaya, Malaysia. Currently, eight scholars are pursuing Ph.D. degree under his supervision. He has also served on the evaluation panels of Ph.D. theses promotion/selection committees in many Universities, including IITs, and as an external assessor for curriculum developments in foreign Universities, namely, Deakin University, Australia, University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has collaborated with various international researchers, including Prof. J. P. Dauer (11 papers), the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Chattanooga, USA, Prof. J. Y. Park (7 papers), Pusan National University, Pusan, South Korea, and Ju Hyun Park (7 papers),  Yeungnam University, South Korea, Prof S. K. Ntouyas (2 papers),  University of Ioannina, Greece, Prof. Er Meng Joo (1 paper), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, Prof. C. P. Lim (7 papers), Deakin University of Australia and Prof. JinRong Wang, Guizhou University, China (2 Papers).

International Academic Exposures

He has international experience as a Visiting Research Professor at Pusan National University, Pusan, South Korea during 2001 (3 months) and 2005-2006 (one year) and the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, UM, Malaysia in 2012 (six months).

 

He joined the High Impact Research (HIR) icon as a Co-Principal Investigator in a joint research project for the tune of Rs. 4,82,80,000 (MYR 28,40,000) with Prof. Dr. Kurunathan Ratnavelu, Principal Investigator, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Malaya, Malaysia, and established novel stability results. Three Ph.D. scholars from GRI have received Post-doc under the HIR project, and one student received his Ph.D. degree. He has formulated MoUs with Yonsei University, South Korea and the Institute of Mathematics Sciences (IMS), University of Malaya (UM), Malaysia (under the exchange programme FIVE scholars completed their Postdoc in UM, and 25 research articles have been published). Recently, he received the offer of an appointment as a Visiting Professor, UCSI University, Malaysia, for two years, from September 1, 2020, to August 31, 2022.

 

Recently, he received the offer of appointment as 1) Visiting Professor from UCSI University, Malaysia, for two years, 2020-2022. 2) External Assessor from UM for promotion and appointment of faculties from Aug 2021 for five years. He received an offer under outstanding scientist for the "Brain Pool (BP) program" by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), a host institution in Pusan National University, South Korea, to work as a visiting professor from Dec. 1, 2022 to Nov. 30, 2023 under the title "Machine Learning for Synchronization of Chaotic Nonlinear Dynamical Systems: Applications to IoHT Cryptography."

R & D Project Grants and Mobilizing Funds at Department Level

He mobilized funds of Rs. 93,62,371/- under Research & Development projects through various funding agencies including DST, CSIR, and NBHM. He was instrumental in getting funds of Rs. 2,30,28,000/- for the Development of the Department of Mathematics under UGC-SAP, DST-FIST, and NBHM library grants.

Societal Contributions

He has served as a Planning Board Member, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore (Appointed by the Excellency the Governor, Chancellor of State Universities, Tamilnadu) for three years (2013-2016). He has also served as a Member of the search committee of Vice-Chancellor, Tamilnadu Open University, Chennai, under the order of the Excellency the Governor, Chancellor of State Universities, Tamilnadu) G.O.(1D) No.300 dt. 17/10/2012. Currently, he served as the Excellency Governor Nominee of Selection Committee of CAS promotions of faculty members, and appointment of the Registrar, COE, Director, for Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai (order by the Excellency the Governor, Chancellor of state Universities, Tamilnadu) G.O.(1D) No.1018/U1/2020 dt. 12/12/2020.

Recognitions/ Honors/Awards

He received the Tamilnadu Scientist Award (TANSA) for the discipline of Mathematical Sciences instituted by the Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology in the year 2005. He has received outstanding contribution awards for reviewing Neurocomputing and ISA Transactions Journals, Elsevier Inc., USA Articles respectively in the years 2018 and 2017. He was the recipient of the MATRICS project for active research of Rs. 6.60 lakhs from DST. Very recently, he received a Mid-Career Award of Rs.10 lakhs from UGC-Faculty Research Promotion Schemes.

 

 As per the Indian research Information Network System (IRINS) and Scopus databases, he is the topmost researcher in GRI-DTBU regarding the highest number of publications in various SCI/SCIE journals with good impact factors and high citations of H-index, vide: http://ruraluniv.irins.org/profile/60969. Also from AD rankings for Scientists with Scientific index he is the First rank in GRI-DTBU and all over India among #39942, #495th ranking in terms of H index 50, #298th ranking in terms of i10 index 211 and total citations 8662 with ranking #801. Recently, his research work has been recognized by the Stanford University survey as a Top 2% of researchers in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Image processing in 2020 (https://data.mendeley.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/2). Also, he retained the same Top 2% of researchers in 2021 & 2022. His three scholars who completed Ph.D. have also received the recognition of the top 2% of scientists. He is the recipient of the Tamilnadu Senior Scientist Award in 2018, Science City, Govt. of Tamilnadu.
