Established in 2006, the government-owned Marathi medium primary school (grades 1 to 4) in Jalindar Nagar (Kanhersar) faced imminent closure. Student enrollment had dropped to just three active students and nearly shut down in 2021.The school building had fallen into disrepair
The school has undergone a major transformation under the leadership of award-winning teacher Dattatray Ware. The school has improved significantly, including establishing academic partnerships with institutions like ISRO and IITs. The school introduced innovative peer-learning model called 'Vishay Mitra' where senior students mentor juniors. It was shortlisted among global finalists for the World's Best School Prize 2025 in the Community Collaboration in education category. The school's capacity has now doubled to 120 students, with a goal of 250.
This is the first Zero Energy School in India. All four walls are made of sliding glass panels, and the double-layered roof combines tensile membrane with polycarbonate materials. The self-sufficient school building runs on solar panels and harvested rain water to support all its utility needs.
