Trezor Bridge | Getting Started: Secure Device & Setup
Trezor Bridge was designed to help a Trezor hardware wallet communicate with a computer, Trezor Suite, and supported web applications. However, there is an important update for new users: standalone Trezor Bridge is now deprecated. Trezor recommends removing the standalone version because keeping it installed may interfere with future Trezor device connections.
For most users, the recommended starting point today is Trezor Suite, which provides the software environment for setting up and managing a Trezor hardware wallet.
What Is Trezor Bridge?
Trezor Bridge was a background application that enabled communication between a Trezor device and compatible software or browsers. It operated without requiring users to interact with it directly. Historically, it was particularly useful when connecting a Trezor device to the Trezor Suite web application.
If you are following an older Trezor Bridge setup guide, avoid downloading an outdated standalone installer from an unofficial website. Instead, use the current Trezor Suite getting-started page and follow the setup instructions provided by Trezor.
Getting Started Securely
Start by downloading Trezor Suite from the official Trezor website. Trezor provides desktop versions for Windows, macOS, and Linux, along with a browser-based version. The company specifically warns users about phishing websites that may appear in search results, so always verify that you are using an official Trezor source.
For the best experience, Trezor recommends the desktop application. If you use the web version, it can be accessed through a compatible Chromium-based browser such as Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Opera. The web app uses browser device-access technology rather than requiring the old standalone Bridge installation.
Connect and Verify Your Device
Once Trezor Suite is installed, connect your hardware wallet using the appropriate cable and follow the on-screen setup instructions. Depending on your Trezor model, Suite will guide you through a device security check before continuing. Newer devices can also perform an authenticity check to help confirm that the hardware is genuine and has not been altered.
If the device is not detected, first check that you are using a data-capable USB cable and that Trezor Suite is up to date. For browser-based connections, ensure your browser supports the required device-access technology.
Install Firmware and Create a Wallet
After connecting the device, Trezor Suite will guide you through firmware installation. Trezor devices are shipped without firmware as a security measure, and Suite provides the appropriate installation process. Some models allow users to select between Standard and Bitcoin-only firmware.
Next, create your wallet and complete the wallet backup process. Your recovery words are critical because they can provide access to your cryptocurrency if your physical device is lost or damaged. Store the backup securely offline and never share it with anyone.
Be especially cautious of websites or messages claiming that you must enter your recovery words to activate Trezor Bridge, repair a wallet, or verify a transaction. Genuine Trezor setup procedures should never require you to disclose your wallet backup to another person or suspicious website.
Removing Old Trezor Bridge
If you previously installed standalone Trezor Bridge, Trezor recommends uninstalling it. On Windows, the old Bridge can be removed through its uninstall program; macOS and Linux users have separate removal procedures described in Trezor's official guide.
For continued protection, keep Trezor Suite updated and use only official Trezor resources. You can also explore the Trezor Suite guides for installation, device connections, firmware updates, and security settings.
Ultimately, Trezor Bridge remains an important part of Trezor's connection history, but standalone Bridge is no longer the recommended setup for most users. New customers should start with the current Trezor Suite workflow, verify their device carefully, protect their wallet backup, and avoid unofficial downloads or phishing pages.
