Light & Shadows
When photographing shadows, use the following tips:
Use Harsh Light
The best shadows are captured in harsh/strong light. To maximize the drama, look for strong, bright light and dark black shadows.
Look for Patterns
Graphic or organic patterns make for interesting shadows.
Any Light Source Will Work
A super sunny day, a flashlight/cell phone light, or sunset are just some examples. Natural or artificial, any light will do, and each light source will create a different effect.
Reflections
Puddles, glass, chrome etc. can be used to add depth and intrigue to your images.
Use Colour
Light streaming through a stain glass window or a cup of tea creates a beautiful colour shadow.
Always Tap the Highlights
The camera on your cell phone will auto light balance your image. You can trick the camera by tapping on the brightest part of your image and lower the exposure by sliding down the sun icon. See video attached for example. This will “deepen” your shadow and give you the best tonal range (highlights with detail to lowlights).
Edit your Image
Smartphones have robust editing function for images. On an iPhone, tap “Edit” on the top right corner to play with exposure, contrast, warmth, shadows etc.
