The Fort Worth Independent School District is reaffirming a powerful long-term commitment to the Fine Arts expected to result in a near $2.5 million acquisition of almost 250 new Steinway-designed Boston pianos.

With an indoor playground for robots, a fossilized stegosaurus egg, a NASA space shuttle remnant, a couple of German incubators and seven pianos by Steinway & Sons, one could easily imagine the new Gries Center for the Arts and Sciences on a sprawling college campus.

The Episcopal Performing Arts Academy is proud to offer once a week, private, 30-minute lessons in the following instruments this fall: piano, voice, ukulele, guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin, viola, and cello. Since the fine motor skills are still being developed in our youngest Knights, ukulele, guitar, banjo and mandolin are only offered for 2nd graders and up.

Lessons are taught throughout the school day on campus. Instructors work in cooperation with our homeroom teachers to ensure that the student never misses an academic period. Students will attend lessons during recess, physical education, language arts, before school, after school or during nap time.

Sick Policy: Students should follow the school's guidelines for illnesses and a make-up lesson will be arranged. Parents must notify the private lesson teacher of the student being absent.

Episcopal's Performing Arts Department is such a special place and I am honored to be part of it. Before joining Episcopal in 2011, I earned my bachelor's degree in music education with a vocal and piano emphases from Louisiana State University. I have taught general music in multiple private schools in the Baton Rouge area and have had a private music studio for the last fourteen years. When I am not teaching, I enjoy traveling, coffee shops and the beach!

I am so excited to be teaching private piano lessons in the Arts Academy here at Episcopal. I have been teaching piano for over 42 years, along with being a general music classroom instructor for 20 years. I earned my bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from LSU - GEAUX TIGERS! I have a long history of making music learning fun and encouraging for my students to love music. I am looking forward to meeting you all in the studio and seeing what we can learn together!

I am honored to be a private piano teacher in the Arts Academy at Episcopal. My love for the piano, and music in general, started at a very young age while watching my father be a church pianist, song writer, and music teacher. I have been a private piano teacher for over 40 years, as well as a general music teacher and church pianist at Temple Baptist Church.

I earned my bachelor's in music education from LSU. In my private studio, I love to watch my students learn and grow in their music education for the piano through interactive activities and fun games. When I am not teaching, I enjoy playing music in the community, cooking, and spending time with my husband and six grown kids.

Marshall joined Episcopal in 2020 from Trinity Episcopal School in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he taught fourth through eighth grade band and lower school general music. He has also taught at Haywood Elementary School in Nashville, TN. Marshall has a Bachelor's degree in Music Education with a focus in Jazz Saxophone from the Ohio State University and a Master's degree also in Music Education from the University of Georgia. Marshall enjoys living nearby Episcopal with his wife, Erin and his daughter, Heidi.

Beginning piano labs provide a fundamental background in rhythm awareness, ear training, basic reading skills, and performance basics once a week. First, second, and third graders receive two semesters of weekly 30-minute private lessons and 45-minute group labs, which provide enjoyable and effective learning of keyboard and musicianship skills. Beginning piano lab is a two semester commitment. Students must be registered in Fall semester to enroll in Spring semester. Labs are limited to eight students and are taught by Preparatory Division faculty and School of Music Piano Pedagogy students. University Piano Pedagogy students teach private lessons under supervision of piano pedagogy faculty. Private lessons are scheduled when Fall semester begins. Labs are offered at the following times:

Two semesters of weekly one-hour group classes in a digital keyboard lab for enjoyable and effective learning of keyboard and musicianship skills. If you have always wanted to play the piano, this two-semester class offers a supportive group in a non-threatening atmosphere. Fall semester: no prerequisite required. Spring semester prerequisite: Semester 1 Adult Piano or 6 months of previous piano study. Class is offered on Thursdays at 6:15 pm.

Successful, satisfying music study is dependent upon consistent, daily practice. Practice time of 30 to 45 minutes per day is required for second-year piano students, increasing to one and a half hours to two hours daily for seventh through twelfth grade students. Young students need parental supervision of all practice periods and require a practice setting free from distractions.

Students need a piano in the home, kept in tune and good repair, and a metronome for use in daily practice. Materials are provided for beginning piano, after which the student will be required to purchase or reimburse the teacher for all music.

The Hartt School Community Division takes great pride in the quality of its pre-college performers. One of the ways we recognize these performers is through departmental honors auditions and recitals held each spring. Students chosen to participate in the honors program are also eligible for the school scholarships described below. The Honors Program is by teacher recommendation only. Students will be notified by their private teacher if they qualify for this program.

High school students are selected for the Senior Honors Recital by audition. Younger students may audition at the recommendation of their teacher. Honors scholarships and awards are presented at the recital.

Although we are unable to provide the same services as public schools, or other programs that specialize in this area, we will work with each family to identify resources and support structures to help the student to succeed. If requested, HCD is able to recommend options for school programming, and will offer guidance to educators concerning appropriate and beneficial instructional activities and/or materials.

Marie has totally revolutionised her studio from private teaching to only group teaching and has seen a massive payoff in engagement, enrollments, excitement and community and so I was delighted to hear that she was keen to share some of her ideas with us.

Similarly, both from formal studies and my personal experience, students that see, hear and feel a sense of community tend to stick with music instruction longer, giving teachers more time to turn students into life-long music makers. Group piano classes do that.

I am currently teaching a group piano class in a private school. unfortunately they only have 3 pianos available in the class room. How do I incorporate the class well with songs with different groups since I can only teach them once a week under 40 minutes only?

Where do you recommend purchasing keyboards for group piano, and does each student need an iPad or is it possible to have success w/paper music, white board and large screen tv connected to my computer?

Hi there. I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you. I have maybe 10 private piano students currently and worked previously in international schools in the middle east where I taught 25 students in a keyboard lab. I have always wanted to do something similar in Ireland where I am from. How many students would you put into a group lesson for 45 minutes? TIA

I have one question in regards to how you use piano maestro. Do each of the students have iPads so they can use the joy tunes app, or do you use a projector/screen for all the students to see the app?

The KU Community Music School strives to inspire students of all ages to develop and nurture their joy in music. We offer programs in private piano instruction at various intensities with a wide array of performance opportunities. The University of Kansas School of Music provides us with a home for our private lessons, studio classes, master classes, and recitals. Aspiring graduate students from the School of Music provide quality instruction under the guidance of world-renowned pedagogue and Cordelia Brown Murphy Professor of Piano Pedagogy, Dr. Scott McBride Smith.

Danlei Yang, born in Chengdu, China, is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance degree under Dr. Scott McBride Smith at KU, where she is a graduate teaching assistant giving private piano lessons and accompanying voice and choral conducting studios. She joined the KU Community Music School as director in August 2022. Before studying at KU, she was awarded a full scholarship for her Bachelor of Music degree study with Dr. Tams Ungr at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She holds a Master of Music degree in piano performance and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she was awarded a full-tuition waiver and joined the Piano Laboratory Program as a piano instructor.

During her years at TCU, she studied Piano Pedagogy with Dr. Ann Gipson where she started her teaching experience and became a member of the Music Teachers National Association.
