Configuring qBittorrent to use CyberGhost's SOCKS5 proxy enhances torrenting privacy by masking your IP address. This guide details the necessary steps for Linux users.
A CyberGhost VPN subscription.
qBittorrent installed on your Linux system.
CyberGhost application NOT required.
Log in to your CyberGhost account on their website.
Navigate to the "VPN Details" or "Manual Configuration" section.
Locate the SOCKS5 proxy credentials. These usually include:
Hostname/Address: Typically a server address (e.g., de-frankfurt-cg001.socks.cyberghostvpn.com).
Port: Usually 1080 or a similar value.
Username: Provided by CyberGhost.
Password: Provided by CyberGhost.
Open qBittorrent.
Go to Tools -> Options.
Select the Connection tab.
Under Proxy Server, configure the following:
Type: SOCKS5
Host: Enter the hostname/address obtained from CyberGhost.
Port: Enter the port number.
Authentication: Check the box "Use proxy authentication".
Username: Enter the username provided by CyberGhost.
Password: Enter the password provided by CyberGhost.
Check the box "Use proxy for peer connections".
(Optional but recommended) Check the box "Disable connections not supported by proxies". This prevents leaks outside the proxy.
Click Apply and then OK.
Restart qBittorrent for the changes to take effect.
Consider configuring your system to use a DNS server that respects your privacy. Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google (8.8.8.8), or Quad9 (9.9.9.9) are common choices. Configure this at the system level, not within qBittorrent.
Alternatively, within qBittorrent's Advanced settings, under Network Interface, you can try binding qBittorrent to the VPN interface, but this requires the CyberGhost application and OpenVPN/WireGuard configuration. This is complex and not the primary focus of SOCKS5 setup.
IP Address Check: After configuring the proxy and restarting qBittorrent, search for a torrent that displays your IP address. Verify that the displayed IP address is that of the CyberGhost proxy server and not your actual IP.
Connection Log: Monitor qBittorrent's execution log for any errors related to the proxy connection.
Incorrect Credentials: Double-check the username and password. Typos are common.
Proxy Downtime: CyberGhost proxy servers can occasionally experience downtime. If torrents are not downloading, verify that the proxy server is operational.
Firewall: Ensure your firewall isn't blocking connections to the CyberGhost proxy server.
Obtain CyberGhost SOCKS5 credentials.
Configure qBittorrent with the correct proxy settings.
Enable proxy for peer connections.
Disable connections not supported by proxies.
Restart qBittorrent.
Verify IP address.
Monitor connection log.
