This Privacy Policy describes how the "Tab Vault" Chrome Extension ("the Extension") collects, uses, and stores your information. We are committed to protecting your privacy and want to be transparent about our practices.
1. What is Tab Vault?
Tab Vault is a Chrome Extension designed to help you save and manage your browser tabs. It allows you to store selected tabs into named groups, open them later, organize them, and share them with others if you choose.
2. Information We Collect and How We Use It
The Tab Vault Extension collects and uses information strictly for its intended functionality, primarily to save and manage your tab groups.
Tab Information (URLs and Titles): When you use the "Store Selected Tab/s" feature or "Add Selected Tabs to Group," the Extension accesses the URLs and titles of the tabs you have highlighted or selected in your current Chrome window. This information is collected solely to save these tabs as part of a group you create.
Group Names: When you create a new tab group or edit an existing one, you provide a name for that group. This name is stored to help you identify and organize your saved tab collections.
Theme Preference: The Extension stores your preference for the light or dark theme to ensure a consistent user experience.
3. How Your Information is Stored
All information collected by the Tab Vault Extension (tab URLs, tab titles, group names, and theme preference) is stored locally on your device using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage.local API.
No Cloud Storage: We do not transmit, store, or have access to your saved tab groups or any other data on any external servers or cloud services controlled by us. Your data remains entirely on your local machine.
Security: As your data is stored locally, its security relies on the security of your device and your Chrome profile.
4. Information Sharing and Third-Party Services
The Tab Vault Extension is designed to minimize data sharing.
No Sale or Renting of Data: We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with any third parties for their marketing or any other purposes.
User-Initiated Export/Import:
Export as File: You can choose to export your tab groups as a local JSON file. This process happens entirely on your device, and the file is saved to your computer.
Export as Shareable Link: If you choose to export groups as a shareable link, the selected tab group data (names, URLs, titles) is encoded directly into the URL's hash fragment. This means the data is not sent to any server when the link is generated or when someone opens the link. The link-opener.html page, hosted on GitHub Pages (familialpunch.github.io), is fetched by your browser to provide the user interface for displaying the shared group(s). The Extension performs a security check (SHA-256 hash validation) on this link-opener.html page to ensure its integrity before generating the link. The tab group data itself is processed client-side by the link-opener.html page and is never sent to the GitHub Pages server.
Import from File/Link: You can import tab groups from a local JSON file or a shareable link. This process also occurs entirely on your device.
Favicon Service: To display favicons next to the URLs in the Extension's interface and the edit modal, the Extension uses Google's favicon service (https://www.google.com/s2/favicons). When a favicon is requested, the hostname (domain name) of the saved URL is sent to google.com. No other identifying information about you or the full URL is sent to Google by the Extension for this purpose.
5. Data Retention
Your tab group data is retained locally on your device for as long as you have the Tab Vault Extension installed and do not manually delete the groups.
Deletion: You can delete individual tab groups or multiple selected groups at any time using the Extension's interface.
Uninstalling the Extension: If you uninstall the Tab Vault Extension, all locally stored data associated with it will be permanently removed from your device.
6. Your Choices and Control
You have full control over your data within the Tab Vault Extension:
Access: You can view all your saved tab groups and their associated tabs directly within the Extension's popup.
Modify: You can rename groups and edit the URLs and titles of individual tabs within a group using the "Edit Group" feature.
Delete: You can delete individual tab groups or enter "multi-select" mode to delete multiple groups at once. The Extension also provides an "Undo" feature for recent deletions.
Export: You can export your data as a local file or a shareable link.
Import: You can import data to restore or add new groups.
7. Children's Privacy
The Tab Vault Extension is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. If you believe we may have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us.
8. Changes to This Privacy Policy
