# Privacy Policy for FileCryptor
## Introduction
FileCryptor (“we”, “our”, or “the app”) is a local file encryption utility. This Privacy Policy explains how the app handles information when you use FileCryptor on your device.
By using FileCryptor, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
---
## Summary
- Encryption and decryption run **on your device**.
- We do **not** collect personal accounts or require sign-in.
- We do **not** store your encryption passwords on our servers (we do not operate a backend for this app).
- Vault metadata is stored **locally** on your device.
- You control your vault: add, edit, and delete items at any time.
---
## Information We Process
### 1. Files you choose
When you pick a file to encrypt or decrypt, the app reads that file **only on your device** to perform encryption or decryption. Encrypted output is saved in the app’s local storage (vault). We do not upload your files to our servers.
### 2. Vault metadata (local only)
The app may store locally on your device:
- Item titles and optional notes you enter
- Original file names
- Paths to encrypted files stored by the app
- Timestamps for created/updated items
This data stays on your device unless you deliberately share a file using the device share sheet.
### 3. Passwords
Passwords you enter are used only to derive encryption keys in memory during encrypt/decrypt operations. **Passwords are not saved by the app** and are not transmitted to us.
### 4. Generated passwords
If you use the password generator, the suggested password exists on your device. If you tap Copy, it is placed on your device clipboard.
---
## Data Sharing
FileCryptor does not sell your data.
The app may use the system **Share** feature so you can send a decrypted (or other) file to another app you choose. That sharing is controlled by you and by the destination app’s privacy practices.
Third-party libraries used for local functionality (for example file picking or sharing) operate on-device and are not used by us to collect analytics in this app build.
---
## Permissions
Depending on your platform, FileCryptor may request access to:
- **Files / documents** — to let you select files to encrypt or decrypt
- **Storage** (Android, where applicable) — to read/write files you choose
Permissions are used only to provide core encryption features.
---
## Data Retention & Deletion
- Vault items and encrypted files remain on your device until you delete them in the app or uninstall the app.
- Deleting a vault item removes its local encrypted file when possible.
- Uninstalling FileCryptor removes app-local data according to your operating system.
---
## Children’s Privacy
FileCryptor is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
---
## Security
We use industry-standard local encryption (AES with a password-derived key) to protect file contents you encrypt. No method of electronic storage is 100% secure. You are responsible for:
- Choosing a strong password
- Keeping your password secret
- Backing up encrypted files if needed
**If you lose your password, encrypted files cannot be recovered.**
---
## International Users
All processing described in this policy occurs locally on your device. We do not operate a cloud service for FileCryptor that transfers your vault contents internationally.
---
## Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.
