1. Introduction
Auto Caption and AI Subtitles ("we", "our", or "the app") is an on-device AI-powered automatic captioning application developed for Android. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data. By using WhisperCC, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
2. What Makes Auto Caption Different
WhisperCC is built on a fundamental privacy principle: your videos and audio never leave your device. All transcription is performed locally using an on-device AI model (Whisper). We do not operate servers that receive, store, or process your video or audio content. Everything stays on your phone.
3. Data We Collect
3.1 Analytics Data We use Google Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage data to help us understand how the app is used and improve it over time. This includes:
Which captioning effects and fonts are selected
Which languages are used for transcription
How long transcription and export processes take
Whether a full captioning session was completed
How often exports are retried or cancelled
How many subtitle blocks are manually edited
Number of projects created, opened, and deleted
Session duration and general app usage patterns
This data is anonymous. It cannot be used to identify you personally.
3.2 Crash Reports We use Google Firebase Crashlytics to automatically collect crash reports and non-fatal error logs when the app encounters a problem. This data includes:
The type and description of the error
The device model and Android version
The app version at the time of the crash
A stack trace showing where in the code the error occurred
An anonymous device installation identifier
This data is used exclusively to identify and fix bugs. It does not include your videos, audio, or subtitle content.
3.3 Device Identifiers Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics use an anonymous Firebase Installation ID — a randomly generated identifier assigned to your app installation. This identifier is not linked to your name, email, Google account, or any personal information. It can be reset by uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
4. Data We Do NOT Collect
We do not collect, upload, or have access to any of the following:
Your videos or any video content you import into the app
Your audio recordings or any audio extracted from your videos
Your transcribed subtitle text or caption content
Your name, email address, phone number, or any contact information
Your location or GPS data
Your camera or microphone input beyond what is needed for the video you explicitly select
Photos from your gallery beyond the video file you explicitly select for captioning
Your contacts, messages, or any other app data
Payment information of any kind
5. How Your Videos and Audio Are Processed
When you import a video into WhisperCC:
The video file is copied into the app's private storage sandbox on your device
Audio is extracted from the video locally on your device
The audio is passed to the Whisper AI model, which runs entirely on your device
The resulting transcript is displayed to you and stored in your local draft
At no point does the video, audio, or transcript travel over the internet or reach our servers
This on-device processing model means that even we — the developers — have no access to your content.
6. Third-Party Services
WhisperCC uses the following third-party services, each with their own privacy practices:

Google AdMob WhisperCC displays advertisements through Google AdMob to support free access to the app. AdMob may collect device identifiers and usage data to serve relevant ads. You may be shown rewarded ads to unlock premium captioning effects. Privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
We do not sell your data to any third party. The only data shared with third parties is the anonymous analytics and crash data described above, shared with Google Firebase, and ad-related data handled by Google AdMob.
7. Data Retention
Analytics and crash data is retained by Google Firebase according to their standard retention policies, typically 60 days for event-level data and 14 months for aggregated reporting data.
Your local app data — including your projects, videos copied into the app sandbox, subtitle drafts, and thumbnail images — is stored entirely on your device and is retained until you delete individual projects within the app or uninstall WhisperCC. Uninstalling the app will permanently remove all locally stored project data.
8. Children's Privacy
WhisperCC is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app and data has been collected, please contact us at the email address below and we will take steps to address it.
9. Your Rights and Choices
Opt out of Analytics You may opt out of Firebase Analytics data collection at any time by going to your device Settings → Google → Ads → Opt out of Ads Personalization. Additionally, analytics collection is automatically disabled in debug builds of the app.
Request Data Deletion Since we do not collect personally identifiable information, most data we hold cannot be linked back to you. However, if you wish to request deletion of any data associated with your anonymous Firebase Installation ID, you may contact us at the email address below. You may also reset your Firebase Installation ID at any time by uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
Delete Local Data All your project data stored locally on your device can be deleted at any time from within the app using the delete button on each project card. Uninstalling the app removes all local data permanently.
10. Data Security
All data transmitted by Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics is encrypted in transit using HTTPS. Your local project files are stored in the app's private sandbox directory, which is not accessible to other apps on your device. We do not store any of your data on our own servers.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the app evolves. When we make significant changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
