1. INTRODUCTION

This Privacy Policy explains how the ISLens mobile application ("ISLens", "the app", "we", "us", or "our") handles your information.

ISLens is an on-device Indian Sign Language (ISL) recognition app. It uses a custom-trained TensorFlow Lite model together with Google MediaPipe hand-landmark detection to recognise the 26 letters of the ISL alphabet (A–Z) in real time, directly on your device.

We are committed to protecting your privacy. ISLens is designed to work fully offline for its core feature — sign detection — so that your camera feed and sign-language data never leave your device.

By downloading, installing, or using ISLens, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.

2. SUMMARY (THE SHORT VERSION)

- The camera is used only to detect hand signs on your device.

- No camera images or video are recorded, uploaded, or stored on any server.

- All sign detection runs 100% on-device and works offline.

- Your saved sentence history is stored only on your device and is deleted when you uninstall the app.

- The internet is used only for two optional features: text translation and sending feedback.

- We do not collect analytics, advertising identifiers, location, or usage-tracking data.

- We do not sell or share your personal information.

3. INFORMATION WE PROCESS

3.1 Camera input (processed on-device, never stored) The camera is used solely to capture hand gestures so the on-device AI model can recognize sign-language letters. Camera frames are processed in real time in the device's memory and are immediately discarded. No photos or videos are saved, recorded, transmitted, or uploaded.

3.2 Recognized text and sentence history (stored locally only) Letters and sentences produced by the app can be saved by you into a local "History". This history is stored only in the app's private storage on your device. It is never uploaded to us or any third party, and it is permanently deleted when you uninstall the app.

3.3 Translation text (optional, requires internet) If you choose a translation language, the recognized text (and only that text) is sent to the My Memory translation service to return a translation. No personal identifiers are attached to these requests. Sign detection itself never requires the internet.

3.4 Feedback information (optional, only if you submit feedback) If you use the in-app Feedback form, you may provide your name, email address, a star rating, and your written feedback. This information is sent so we can read your feedback and send you a confirmation email. You are free to use the app fully without ever submitting feedback.

3.5 App settings (stored locally only) Your preferences — such as theme (Default/Light/Dark), button sounds, vibration, chosen notification sound, and prediction mode — are stored locally on your device and are not transmitted anywhere.

4. HOW WE USE INFORMATION

We process information only to:

- Recognize sign-language letters and build words/sentences on-device.

- Translate recognized text and read it aloud when you request it.

- Save sentences to your local history when you choose to.

- Receive and respond to feedback you choose to send.

- Remember your app preferences.

We do NOT use your information for advertising, profiling, behavioral tracking, or sale to third parties.

5. PERMISSIONS WE REQUEST AND WHY

- Camera (android.permission.CAMERA): required to detect hand signs in real time. Frames are processed on-device and never stored.

- Internet (android.permission.INTERNET) and Network State (android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE): used only for optional text translation and feedback submission, and to check connectivity.

- Vibrate (android.permission.VIBRATE): used for button haptic feedback, if you enable it.

- Storage (READ/WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, on older Android versions only): used solely to save the ISL alphabet chart image to your gallery when you tap "Download ISL Chart". On modern Android versions this is handled through the system media store without broad storage access.

We request only the permissions necessary for the features above.

6. THIRD-PARTY SERVICES

ISLens uses the following third-party services only for the optional features noted. Each service processes data under its own privacy policy:

- MyMemory Translation API — used to translate recognised text when you select a non-English language. Only the text to be translated is sent.

- Web3Forms — used to deliver feedback messages you submit to the development team.

- EmailJS — used to send a confirmation/thank-you email back to the email address you provide in the feedback form.

- Google MediaPipe / TensorFlow Lite — used on-device for hand detection and classification. These run locally and do not transmit your camera data off the device.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party services. Please review their respective privacy policies for details.

7. DATA STORAGE AND RETENTION

- Sentence history and app settings are stored locally on your device in the app's private storage.

- This data remains until you delete individual entries, clear all history, clear the app's data, or uninstall the app.

- Uninstalling the app permanently deletes all locally stored data.

- We do not maintain server-side accounts or copies of your in-app history or camera data.

- Feedback you submit is retained by us only as long as needed to review and respond to it.

8. DATA SHARING AND SELLING

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. We do not share your information with third parties except as strictly necessary

to provide the optional translation and feedback features described above, or where required by law.

9. CHILDREN'S PRIVACY

ISLens is intended for general audiences and is suitable for use as an educational and accessibility tool. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because sign detection runs on-device and no personal data is required to use the core features, the app does not gather identifying information about its users. If you believe a child has provided us personal data through the feedback form, please contact us so we can remove it.

10. DATA SECURITY

We take reasonable measures to protect your information:

- Core processing is performed on-device, minimising data exposure.

- Network requests for translation and feedback are made over secure HTTPS connections.

- No camera imagery is transmitted or stored. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. YOUR CHOICES AND RIGHTS

- You can use the entire core experience offline without sending any data over the internet.

- You can avoid all network use by not selecting a translation language and not submitting feedback.

- You can delete individual history entries or clear all history at any time from within the app.

- You can disable sounds and vibration in Settings.

- You can remove all locally stored data by clearing the app's data or uninstalling the app.

- Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal information you submitted via feedback. Contact us to exercise these rights.

12. ACCURACY AND INTENDED USE

ISLens is provided as an assistive and educational tool. Sign recognition accuracy can vary with lighting, hand positioning, camera quality, and other conditions. ISLens should not be relied upon as the sole means of communication in safety-critical or emergency situations.

13. CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, within the app. Your continued use of ISLens after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
