PRIVACY POLICY — DETENT
Last updated 21 August 2026
THE SHORT VERSION
Detent has no accounts, no sign-in and no analytics. The developer never sees your progress or anything else about you. Two things involve someone else: the game shows ads supplied by Google AdMob, and Android backs the game up to your own Google account the same way it backs up your other apps.
YOUR PROGRESS
Which levels you have solved, your stars, your favourites, your daily streak, your chosen theme and your sound settings are saved in the app's storage on your phone. The developer has no server and no way to read any of it.
Three things can move that information off the phone, all of them yours to control.
1. Android backup. If backup is switched on for your Google account — it is on by default on most phones — Android periodically copies Detent's saved data to your own Google Drive, so that setting up a new phone restores your progress. This is a feature of Android, not of Detent. The copy sits in your Google account, governed by Google's terms, and the developer cannot see it or reach it. You can switch it off, or delete what is already stored, in your phone's Settings under Google, then Backup.
2. Transfer codes. Settings has a "Backup & transfer" screen that turns your progress into a short line of text you can paste into Detent on another phone. The code holds levels, stars, favourites, streaks and settings, and nothing else — no name, no email, no device identifier, nothing that identifies you. It goes wherever you send it and nowhere else; it is never uploaded to the developer, and it stops working after twenty-four hours.
3. Uninstalling. Removing the app deletes everything Detent has stored on the phone, immediately and permanently. It does NOT delete a copy Android has already put in your Google account — that is Google's to hold, not the app's, and it is what makes your progress reappear if you reinstall. To be rid of that copy as well, delete it yourself under Backups in the Google Drive or Google One app; left alone, Google removes a device's backup automatically after roughly two months without use.
ADVERTISING
Ads are served by Google AdMob. Two kinds appear: an ad you choose to watch in exchange for three hints, and an occasional full-screen ad between levels. Nothing is taken away if you decline — Undo and Restart are always free.
To serve and measure those ads, Google may collect and process your device's advertising ID, approximate location derived from your IP address, device and app information, and your interactions with the ads themselves. Google acts as an independent controller of that data. Its practices are described at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and the list of ad partners is at https://support.google.com/admob/answer/9012903
The developer never receives your personal information from this. Only aggregate totals — how many ads were shown, how much they earned — are visible.
PURCHASES
Detent offers one optional purchase, which unlocks the remaining themes and sound profiles, removes the ads between levels, and keeps hints topped up. The purchase is handled entirely by Google Play. The app never sees your payment details and stores nothing about you as a result of it.
Because Google Play records the purchase against your Google account rather than against your phone, installing Detent again — on this phone or a new one — restores it. That check happens between the app and Google Play; the developer is not part of it.
YOUR CHOICES
Where the law requires a consent choice — the EEA, the UK, and certain US states — a consent form is shown the first time the game runs, and you can reopen it at any time from Settings, under "Ad privacy choices".
Everywhere else, Android lets you reset or delete your advertising ID and opt out of ad personalisation in Settings, under Privacy, then Ads.
Android backup is controlled separately, in Settings under Google, then Backup.
CHILDREN
Detent is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from them.
CHANGES
If this policy changes, the date at the top of this page changes with it, and the change is described here.
21 August 2026 — Detent gained a transfer code and began relying on Android's own backup, so the earlier claim that progress "never leaves your phone" was no longer true and has been replaced with an account of both, and of how to turn either off. Nothing about advertising, purchases or what the developer can see has changed.
