When we founded Prism Youth Theater Company, we spent hours searching for a name that represents what we believe in. Our guiding concepts of inclusivity and transformation through art brought many ideas to the table, including "Triangle," "Community," "Diamond," and "Kaleidoscope."
PRISM Being a triangular shape that can bend light to create a beautiful rainbow, this concept a prism is perfect metaphor for how we work. Lots of inspiration, perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds come in, then transform, and the result is a beautiful array of art.
YOUTH We are kids, championing kids' work. A big barrier in an young artist's life is the power adults have to allow or reject them in certain spaces, and here we do our best to dismantle that system. Every project is a youth-respecting, youth-made environment where we can say what needs to be said.
THEATER Children's theatrical art often takes the form of typical stories in typical formats. Though many of us began working that way, now we push the boundaries of our walls and tales, reinforcing the idea that 'theater' is constantly changing. We chose this word to remind us of our roots, and the possible future.
COMPANY To us, company is a title for a group of people, and not necessairily a business. We are a group of friends who keep each other ‘company’ and inspire through stories.
Prism Youth Theater Company was designed by us, Leo Madson and Melanie Morreau, in October 2020. When lockdown took theater experiences from us, we saw the need to build a space where we don't have to wait for others to allow us to make art. We love to experiment with what can happen when we play; a young eye brings a fresh and sometimes overlooked perspective. We take lots of time to explore how things are done and come up with new ways of making art. All of that, combined with the philosophies and light you bring, makeup Prism Youth Theater Company.
Leo (he/him) is an eighteen-year-old trans-nonbinary arts enthusiast. His experience behind the table includes First Stage’s YC Playground Festival and world premiere production of The Gracious Sisters, Milwaukee Chamber Theater’s Young Playwrights Festival, and Prism’s The Hidden Strings. He loves to whistle and teach young sailors on the lake. Infinite love to his four siblings and devoted mom.
Melanie Morreau has been a lover of theatrical arts since her first show at the age of nine, performing alongside Leo. Since then, Melanie has felt theater is her second home and a place with endless possibilities. Melanie does most of her work with WAWM Theater, including shows such as The Diary of Anne Frank and The 39 Steps Radio Show. Melanie has become passionate about directing and learning the ins and outs of theater as a "second act" in her theatrical career. She most looks forward to finding and creating that well-known magical spark that theater brings within the shows to come.
Leo designed all of our marketing materials in Photoshop, from this website to the play-specific images for The Hidden Strings. In the process of creating a logo, many hours of trial and error occurred. (Look below to find early files from 2020 and more!)

This image is a draft of a compass rose approach. Trying to combine both prisms, mixed colors, and cardinal directions. With typewriter font? Why not.
Here is a pyramid with texture and dimension. See the similarities between these colors and our chosen colors? This is where we started to narrow in on what we like.
