In the 14th episode of Maria Mercedes, Maria (Thalia) is shocked to learn that her father, Santiago (Fernando Colunga), is alive and has returned to their home. She is angry at him for abandoning them and blames him for her mother's death. Santiago tries to explain that he was kidnapped by a gang of criminals and held captive for years, but Maria does not believe him. She tells him to leave and never come back. Meanwhile, Jorge Luis (Arturo Peniche), the wealthy businessman who is in love with Maria, visits her at her house and offers to help her with her financial problems. He also proposes to her, but Maria rejects him, saying that she does not love him and that she is engaged to Chicho (Luis Gatica), a mechanic who is also her childhood friend. Jorge Luis is hurt and confused by Maria's decision, and vows to win her over.
The episode ends with a cliffhanger, as Maria receives a phone call from Chicho, who tells her that he has been arrested for stealing a car. Maria rushes to the police station to help him, but she is unaware that the car belongs to Jorge Luis, and that he has set up a trap for her.
