Jamwa Ramgarh Dam, located about 30–35 km from Jaipur, was once the main source of drinking water for the Pink City. Built in 1903 on the Banganga River, the lake spread over 15 square kilometers and supplied water to thousands of families. For decades, people remembered it as a picnic spot and a lifeline for the city.
In 1982, Ramgarh Lake came into the spotlight when it hosted rowing competitions at the Asian Games. Men’s singles, doubles, and fours events were organized here. At that time, the lake was full of water and became a symbol of Jaipur’s sporting spirit.
Sadly, from the late 1990s, Ramgarh Dam started drying up. Encroachment, deforestation in the catchment area, and lack of proper maintenance made the water flow stop. By the year 2000, the lake had completely dried. For nearly 25 years now, Jaipur has been waiting to see water again in this dam.
The Rajasthan Government has started fresh efforts to bring water back. Leaders like Dr. Kirodi Lal Meena and Mahendra Pal Singh have been actively pushing for revival plans. The latest step is the use of cloud seeding technology with drones. In July and August 2025, the Agriculture Department, along with American company Accel-1, launched drone-based artificial rain experiments at Ramgarh.
The drones were sent up to 10,000 feet carrying special particles to seed clouds. Some trials failed due to heavy rainfall alerts or technical issues, but one recent attempt showed positive results with light artificial rain over the area. Officials believe that if these tests succeed, water may start collecting again in Ramgarh Dam after more than two decades.
If water returns, it will not only support Jaipur city but also help recharge groundwater, provide water for farming, and bring back the lost charm of the Jamwa Ramgarh Wildlife Sanctuary spread across 300 sq km. Leopards, deer, and hundreds of bird species still live in the area and will benefit from a restored lake.
Ramgarh Dam is also important for tourism. It lies only 20 km away from Amer Fort (Amer Kila), one of Jaipur’s most visited heritage sites. Tourists exploring Amer, Jaigarh, and Nahargarh Forts can easily include Ramgarh in their journey once the dam is revived.
