About PETA

The Nova Scotia Teachers Union has 21 Professional Associations. The Primary Elementary Teachers Association (PETA) is one of these associations. PETA consists of eight executive members; teachers from across the Nova Scotia's Regional Centres who volunteer their time. PETA organizes a conference on the fourth Friday of every October for classroom teachers at the elementary level. This conference is planned, developed and implemented by teachers for teachers. Each year, we invite unique guests and leaders in education to meet NSTU members and provide excellent professional development. PETA also offers a number of grants for conference attendees to help them purchase items that will be of direct use by students. Further information on grant applications can be found here.

According to the NSTU, the mandate of the Professional Associations is to provide the opportunity for member-initiated professional development. Associations assume responsibility for encouraging and assisting in professional development activities in their respective fields.

The objectives of the Professional Associations are:

  • to improve professional practice by increasing members' knowledge and understanding;

  • to disseminate ideas, trends and new developments;

  • to advocate interests of Professional Associations, consistent with NSTU policy and practice;

  • to furnish recommendations and advise the Provincial Executive and NSTU committees on matters special to the Professional Association.
