Primal is set in an anachronistic vision of prehistory, portraying extinct dinosaurs, Ice Age mammals, and early hominids all coexisting with post-metallurgy Homo sapiens in a single time period, incorporating many elements of science fiction, fantasy, horror, action, and adventure. The first 2 seasons revolve around the journey of Spear (Aaron LaPlante), a Neanderthal, and Fang, a uniquely intelligent female Tyrannosaurus, both of whom lose their families early on and decide to join forces to survive their unforgiving environment together, eventually discovering developed civilizations that they end up in conflict with. The series has no dialogue throughout its first season, before incorporating minimal dialogue in the second season, in line with Tartakovsky's previous work.

The first 10-episode season of Primal was split into two 5-episode parts. The series premiered on Adult Swim on October 8, 2019, with the remaining episodes releasing daily that same week. The second half of the season premiered one episode April 1, 2020, with the remaining episodes premiering weekly for the five weeks following October 4, 2020. In August 2020, the series was renewed for a 10-episode second season,[2][3] which premiered July 22 and concluded September 16, 2022. Following the second-season finale and conclusion of Spear and Fang's storyline, Tartakovsky confirmed that Primal would become an anthology series from its forthcoming third season onward.[1] In June 2023, the series was renewed for a 10-episode third season.

The first season consists of 10 episodes.[5] On August 31, 2020, the series was renewed for a second season which consists of 10 episodes.[7] On June 16, 2023, the series was renewed for a third season which consists of 10 episodes.[8]

The first season premiered on October 8, 2019, with episodes from the first half of the season airing daily from the premiere date.[30][31] An episode from the second half was shown during Adult Swim's April Fools' Day 2020 run. Adult Swim announced on their Twitter that the second half would start airing on October 4, 2020.[32][33][34]

The first season of Primal was broadcast during Thanksgiving weekend on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block for the first time on November 29, 2020. After the second-season finale "Echoes of Eternity" aired on September 16, 2022, Genndy Tartakovsky confirmed that while Spear and Fang's story was officially concluded, he was formulating a third season for the series with a focus on new characters, intending for Primal to become an anthology series, inspired by the stand-alone second-season episode "The Primal Theory". Tartakovsky said that he intends to develop the third season after completing his work on New Line Cinema's Fixed, and season 3 was officially announced in June 2023.[1]

Following the success of its first two seasons, the show's creator teased that he has big things in store for the upcoming installment, which was announced at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The show, which is produced by Cartoon Network, was not only a hit for Adult Swim, with its last season attracting nearly four million viewers, but was also met by critical fanfare, with it going on to win five Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Animated Program."

With great faith put into the show's creator, Sam Register, President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios expressed that when Genndy says he is not finished with Primal, our only job is to do everything possible to support that vision and give him the opportunity to tell more incredible and imaginative stories." Tartakovsky became a big name within the world of animation thanks to his work on such beloved titles such as Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and Sym-Bionic Titan. The visionary's newest project is Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, which currents airs on Adult Swim, before becoming available on Max the following day. When asked by ComicBook about what fans can expect from the new season, Tartavosky shared that he had "something in mind that is so spectacular," teasing the newest chapter would tackle a "brand-new world," one that felt like a "natural progression" for the show.

With a continuation for the series a long way away, largely due to Genndy Tartakovsky's involvement with other projects, we can make approximations as to what might show up for season three of Primal.

Tartakovsky has already made up his mind regarding season two's ending: Spear will remain dead. There's no grand plan to bring him back, no otherworldly magic, no time travel shenanigans, nothing. Instead, Tartakovsky has instead voiced an interest in concluding Spear, Fang, and Mira's story in exchange for something new, converting the series into a seasonal anthology. According to him, he's choreographed action for samurais, for space knights, but never for a primitive caveman. It's partly why he started the series with so much gusto and enthusiasm.

This isn't to say that Spear and Fang's story can't come back in some capacity. Tartakovksy has stated that if fan interest is significant enough, he may return to Spear and Fang's family in the future. Whether it will be a full season or a one-off episode remains to be seen.

Many of these villains, in addition to other characters, took direct inspiration from various mythologies found around the world. Greek, Japanese, Egyptian, and Hindi deities both appear as themselves and as direct inspirations for characters throughout the show. Primal is no different. With the leading villain of season two taking direct inspiration from the Norse god of revenge, Vidarr, there's plenty of room for more mythological representation in the future.

Though the show avoids naming civilizations directly, we see visual references to Egyptian, Babylonian, Persian, and Assyrian cultures, in addition to the previous Norse culture held by the Vikings. Based on what season three is about, we might see a more explicit representation of Zoroastrianism, ancient Egyptian polytheism, or even just folklore monsters in keeping with the grim tone of the series.

Although Tartakovsky has shut down the theory that Primal takes place in an alternate future, we briefly see what a more modern setting could look like in "The Primal Theory," a divisive episode that likely serves as a proof-of-concept for future anthology-like stories. Taking place in the 1890s, it follows a group of English scientists as they defend their estate from a violent, inhumane asylum escapee. Beyond a few visual references -- the antagonist closely resembling Spear, along with several weapons and taxidermized animals from the prehistoric era making a recontextualized appearance -- there's no direct link to the main events of season two.

However, the episode's main theme is something that would easily translate well to an anthology. The scientists are forced to remove themselves from any sort of dignity and sportsmanship, reducing themselves to the same methods their attacker uses in order to survive. In essence, they're reverting to their most primal selves. The gradual shift from the use of high-powered firearms to metal forged melee weapons, to finally, animal bones and bare knuckles, reinforces this idea. This concept can be applied to just about any scenario you can think of: a modern zombie apocalypse, becoming trapped in an isolated forest, defending a castle, any situation that forces someone to act more on instinct than compassion or rationality can possibly be used as a setting in future seasons. 2351a5e196
