Recent advancements in AI technologies have significantly expanded the possibilities for systems that enhance creativity and productivity, ultimately benefiting humanity. For example, AI-empowered online forums have revolutionized how we engage in processes, disseminate and generate information, and make decisions. What sets modern AI apart is its unparalleled ability to manage vast quantities of information in various formats, collaboratively (through Human-AI teaming) and independently.
However, like all technologies, AI also presents a dual nature, offering opportunities and challenges. This duality necessitates careful management to maximize benefits while mitigating risks.
To address these complexities, cross-disciplinary research is crucial. It can highlight the advantages and tackle the pressing challenges associated with AI tools.
The 5th International Workshop on Democracy and AI (DemocrAI 2024) focus on the role of AI in 'augmented democracy,' Will delve into this topic across four main areas:
Design and Application of Conversational AI: We will examine how to design CAIs to enhance meaningful digital engagement and democracy.
Automated Tools for Citizen Participation: We will explore the significance of computerized tools in enhancing digital citizen participation, focusing on the design and implementation of such platforms.
Social Informatics and Democracy: This paper will investigate the role of social informatics experiments in democracy and their societal implications.
Legal and Ethical Considerations: We will discuss the legal and ethical dimensions of using AI in digital democracy settings.
The DemocrAI-Winter 2024 workshop aims to explore these dimensions thoroughly by inviting researchers from diverse backgrounds spanning social science and AI research domains. Our goal is to facilitate the exchange of insights and experiences, identify emerging trends, and foster collaboration across various strands of AI and social research.
