Chief Petty Officer Hazlewood enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 1988. He attended basic training at Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Fla., where he also completed Machinist’s Mate “A” School. He then attended Submarine School in Groton, Conn., and reported to his first assignment in July 1988; USS SEA DEVIL (SSN 664) in Charleston, S.C. While there he earned his Submarine Warfare qualification and became on the “Devil’s Own.”
Onboard the SEA DEVIL, he completed Mediterranean and Northern deployments, spending a month under the Polar Cap. In April 1992, he transferred to the USS JAMES K. POLK (SSN 645) in Norfolk, Va., serving in a vital role as an auxillaryman – assisting in the submarine’s conversion from a ballistic missile boat to a SEAL delivery platform. In March 1994 he attended the Navy’s Police Academy in San Antonio and was assigned as a Patrolman at Commander-In-Chief, Atlantic Fleet, in Norfolk, ultimately assuming the position of Watch Commander.
He was discharged in May 1997 and affiliated with the Navy Reserve as an Intelligence Specialist until he was recalled to active duty in February 1998 as a Canvassing Recruiter at the Little Creek, Va., Amphibious Base where he became a top ten recruiter for the Region, earning ‘National Intel Recruiter of the Year’. He also served as the Recruiter-in-Charge for Norfolk Naval Air Reserve.
In June 2002, he transferred to the Reserve Recruiting Headquarters in New Orleans, La., where he established the Leads Analyst position in the Marketing Department. In 2004, Reserve and Active Duty Recruiting Commands merged and he became the first Recruiter-in-Charge of a combined recruiting station responsible for both the active and reserve missions while assigned to the New Orleans Recruiting District.
With the devastation sustained following Hurricane Katrina he was charged with reestablishing Navy Recruiting’s presence within the New Orleans area. In 2006 he became the district’s Special Warfare Coordinator. While there, in 2007, he was selected for promotion to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In July 2008 he transferred to Navy Recruiting District, New York, serving as the Marketing Officer and as the Reserve Zone Supervisor. In May 2012, he retired from Active Duty and served as the Naval Science Instructor at Pearl River Central High School in Carriere, Mississippi until June of 2020. In July of 2020 he was selected by Pearl River High as their Naval Science Instructor. Woo Hoo!
Chief Hazlewood earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management and his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from St. Leo University. His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3) and numerous service and campaign awards.
He was proudly born and raised in the state of Texas. He is married to his wife Laura from Hampton, Va. They have two wonderful children and one granddaughter.
