How I Make Videos

25 April 2020

Maybe I'll make a video about this on YouTube at some point, but here's a good place to start for people who are interested in starting up their own channel.

The equipment I use:

  • Xbox One

  • iPad (6th Gen)

  • iPhone 7

That's seriously all I use. It doen't require a whole lot of specialized equipment to start a channel. Worry about that later, because you have bigger fish to fry right now.

  1. Record video using screen recording feature on Xbox. Record audio in Voice Memos app on phone.

  2. Upload video to Xbox Live and download it to iPad using the Xbox app. AirDrop audio to iPad.

  3. Create new movie in iMovie. Yes, iMovie. You don't need fancy editing sofware to get started.

  4. Fiddle around in iMovie to synchronize audio and video. If your video is in excess of 10 minutes, this step is important.

  5. Add text to end screen.

  6. Use an intro logo with a blank green backgound. I created mine in Keynote. Again, you don't need fancy software for this. Use "green/blue screen" in iMovie to overlay intro logo onto game clip.

  7. Upload to YouTube. This process is fairly simple, and YouTube will walk you through each step. I make thumbnails using Keynote.

If I were to offer one piece of advice, though, it would be to just get started. Your videos may be complete abominations, but you'll get the experience you need to improve and the feedback on what people want.
