Hard Times by Charles Dickens is a classic novel set in Victorian England, originally published in 1854. It follows the story of Thomas Gradgrind, a harsh utilitarian school headmaster, and his family and students, who struggle to reconcile their diverse perspectives on life. Through the character of Thomas Gradgrind, Dickens paints a vivid picture of the industrialization of England, and the effects it had on the lives of those in the working class. Through the eyes of his characters, Dickens explores the importance of having a sense of joy in life, and the consequences of a life without it. The novel's themes of social class, industrialization, and human emotion remain relevant to this day, making Hard Times a timeless classic.

How the group works: Books (library group loan) are issued at a meeting for members to read, and are then discussed at the following meeting. We choose our reading list democratically each year so everyone is sure of finding something they like. We very rarely agree about the merits of a particular book, which adds to our enjoyment and the liveliness of our meetings.
The book on loan is returned at the following meeting. If a member is unable to attend, please arrange with the Group Leader on how to return the book
