If you want professional-grade studio monitoring with a wired connection that prioritizes accuracy and isolation, choose PreSonus HD9; if you need long-lasting wireless convenience with active noise cancellation for daily commuting or travel, choose CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active. This choice isn't about which sounds "better" in a vacuum, but rather which design philosophy fits your specific lifestyle, especially when considering the unique needs of seniors who value clarity, ease of use, and comfort during extended listening sessions.
• PreSonus HD9: The standout strength is its high-fidelity, closed-back acoustic design tailored for precise audio mixing and deep listening isolation, while the trade-off is the lack of wireless freedom and no active noise cancellation technology. This pick is for audiophiles, studio engineers, and seniors who prefer a secure, wired fit without battery anxiety.
• CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active: Its biggest advantage is the hybrid active noise cancellation paired with an impressive 50-hour battery life on a single charge, though it relies on Bluetooth connectivity which can introduce latency compared to direct wired signals. This pick is for commuters, travelers, and seniors seeking modern convenience, app-based sound customization, and all-day endurance.
The PreSonus HD9 is built with a singular purpose in mind: accurate sound reproduction. It utilizes a closed-back, circumaural acoustic design that creates a seal around the ears, effectively blocking out external distractions. This physical isolation is crucial for anyone working in a noisy environment or simply wanting to focus entirely on the music without any interference. The headphones feature 45mm dynamic neodymium drivers capable of handling up to 1,800 mW of power, ensuring that even the most complex passages remain clear and detailed. The frequency response is tightly controlled between 10 Hz and 26 kHz, offering a wide range that captures both deep bass nuances and crisp high-frequency details that cheaper models often miss.
For seniors, this model offers a distinct advantage in terms of stability and simplicity. The ear cups are designed to rotate 180 degrees, allowing them to swivel flat against the head for storage or adjust perfectly to different head shapes. The padded headband is adjustable and described as providing a snug fit that reduces listening fatigue over time. Because they operate via a wired 3.5mm connection with a 10-foot cable, there is no need to worry about charging schedules or Bluetooth pairing issues. The passive noise control is purely mechanical, relying on the quality of the materials—specifically the leather-like enclosure material—to create a barrier against sound. This makes them incredibly reliable for users who might find the menus and touch controls of wireless devices confusing or frustrating.

However, the HD9 is not for everyone. If you require the ability to move freely across a room without being tethered by a cable, these headphones will feel restrictive. They also lack active noise cancellation, meaning in very loud environments like busy airports or construction sites, you may still hear background noise despite the excellent passive isolation. The weight of 8 ounces is substantial enough to be noticeable during very long sessions, though the padding helps distribute the load. You should skip this option if you prioritize portability above all else or if you plan to use these primarily for casual, on-the-go listening where wireless convenience is non-negotiable.
The CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active represents a shift toward modern, feature-rich wireless audio. Its primary selling point is the adaptive active noise cancellation, which claims to block up to 40 dB of ambient noise. This is a game-changer for those who travel frequently or work in open offices where silence is essential. The device supports Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring a stable connection with minimal dropouts, and includes support for LDAC and Hi-Res certification. This means the audio quality remains high even when streaming wirelessly, thanks to the 40mm nickel-plated drivers that deliver rich texture and energy. The frequency range extends from 20Hz to 40kHz, covering the full spectrum of human hearing and beyond, which appeals to listeners who want every detail of their favorite tracks.
Comfort is another major pillar for this model, making it particularly suitable for seniors who wear headphones for hours at a time. The earpads utilize memory foam covered in faux leather, designed to be soft and breathable. The headband is described as cap-friendly, suggesting it doesn't crush hairstyles or cause pressure points. Perhaps most importantly for daily users, the battery life is exceptional. With active noise cancellation turned on, you get up to 50 hours of playtime, and with it off, the battery can last up to 100 hours. A quick five-minute charge provides four hours of listening, eliminating the stress of a dead battery during a trip. The inclusion of transparency mode allows you to instantly toggle between isolation and hearing your surroundings, which is vital for safety when walking outdoors.
While the features are impressive, there are trade-offs to consider. The reliance on a digital interface means you must navigate through the Nothing X app to access custom EQ settings, spatial audio modes, and personal sound profiles. This adds a layer of complexity that some users might find overwhelming compared to the simple plug-and-play nature of wired headphones. The audio latency is listed at 120 milliseconds, which is acceptable for music but could be noticeable for video editing or gaming. Additionally, the lightweight plastic construction, while comfortable, may not feel as durable or premium as the more robust build of the PreSonus model. If you prefer tactile buttons over touch controls or dislike managing software updates, this might not be the ideal fit.

• Best for Long Wear Comfort → CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active, utilizing memory foam earpads for extended sessions.
• Best for Simplicity → PreSonus HD9, requiring no charging, apps, or button combinations to function.
In my opinion, I would recommend the CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active for the vast majority of users, including seniors looking for the best active noise cancelling headphones for daily life. The combination of 50-hour battery life, effective active noise cancellation, and the flexibility of wireless connectivity outweighs the benefits of the wired-only PreSonus model for general consumption. While the PreSonus HD9 is undeniably superior for critical listening in a studio, the CMF BY NOTHING device adapts better to a mobile, unpredictable world. For seniors specifically, the ease of use provided by the auto-pairing features and the ability to listen for days without charging make it the more practical and enjoyable choice.
Both models offer clear sound, but the CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active includes customizable EQ settings and spatial audio via an app, allowing users to tailor frequencies to their specific hearing profile. The PreSonus HD9 offers a neutral, flat response which is great for accuracy but less adaptable to individual hearing needs.
The PreSonus HD9 features ear cups that rotate 180 degrees, which helps with storage and adjusting the fit for different head sizes, though they do not clip onto earbuds. The CMF BY NOTHING model focuses on a lightweight, cushioned fit rather than rotating mechanisms.
The CMF BY NOTHING Headphone Pro Active is designed for portability with a secure over-ear fit and sweat-resistant capabilities implied by its wireless nature, making it better suited for active use. The PreSonus HD9 is heavier and wired, making it less ideal for sports but excellent for stationary listening.
